Deceased was born in Tolland, Conn., and removed to Ohio with her parents--Cornelius Norris and Abigail Davis--when a maiden of 10 years. The family being poor, and consisting in all of eleven adults, it can readily be seen that it was a hand to hand battle whether they would succeed in rearing their little ones or perish in the wilderness six hundred miles from home, but the spirit which was in so many of our pioneers was well developed in this couple. Their faith and energy enabled them to preserve their family entire for long years until the forest gave way. Mrs. Holcomb was in many respects a remarkable woman. She was a pensioner of the United States Government, her husband, Caleb Holcomb, having been at one time engaged in the struggle of 1812. The welfare of her family, the church, and the community in which she lived, was the great aim of this noble, Christian woman. A person of great strength of character and decided convictions, but never unduly pressing her opinions upon others. She had the grace to abstain, like all true women, in the opinion of the writer, from any active participation in politics, but always anxious, always active, for what she esteemed to be for the good of others. It is to such mothers that our country owes its strength. In what we are pleased to term, the small affairs of life, Mrs. H. excelled. No gossip ever found a willing listener in the person of "Aunt Nabby," but a gentle reminder that their services were not needed. Always fond of children, willing to listen to their little troubles, and was eminently a peacemaker among young and old. The mother of a large family who are now stricken with grief at her departure, it has been hers to enjoy the society of a very large number of descendants, the little son of W...Whiting of Windsor Mills, representing the fifth generation. We do not desire to multiply words; it is enough to say there has gone one of earth's best. She occupied a place near the hearts of everyone who knew her best. It had been her prayer for years that in her declining strength, her mental faculties might be unimpaired, a wish which the All-wise Father was pleased to grant in a wonderful degree. G.
