Abram Childears died yesterday afternoon at 4:40 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cora Burdick, 108 Elm Street, of chronic Bright's Disease, after an illness of several months. Mr. Childears was born in Fulton County, Illinois, January 27, 1845. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted and served throughout the war as a member of Company A One Hundred Seventy-second Illinois Volunteer Infantry. After returning home, he was married to Miss Sarah Ellis. To them were born five children, four of whom are living, and three of whom were with their father when he died. The youngest daughter, Nellie, died more than 20 years ago. In 1870 Mr. Childears, with his family, moved to Kansas, settling in the Lena Valley neighborhood, Greenwood County, a few miles east of Madison. They lived there until March 1, 1884, when they came to Emporia and went into the coal business. In 1904 Mrs. Childears died and since then Mr. Childears had lived with his children. Mr. Childears leaves his daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Truex, of Emporia; Miss Nora E. Childears, who teaches in Kansas City, but whose home is in Emporia; Mrs. Cora Burdick of Emporia, and his son, J. J. Childears, of Bakersfield, Calif. Also there are six sisters and two brothers, five of his sisters being with him when he died. The sisters are Mrs. Mary Morris, Mrs. Sarah Felkel, Mrs. Jane Millard, all of near Madison; Mrs. Margaret Anderson, of York, Nebr.; Miss Ella Childears, of Kansas City, and Mrs. Ann White, of Cuba, Ill. The brothers are Eli Childears, of Cleveland, Okla., and William Childears, of Lewiston, Ill. The son, J. J. Childears, will be here tomorrow to attend the funeral. The body will be taken Tuesday morning to the Lena Valley Cemetery for interment. The grave services probably will be in charge of the G. A .R., Mr. Childears having been a member of Post No. 464. The services will be at 10:30 o'clock at the Lena Valley Church, and will be conducted by Rev. Brown of the Madison Methodist Church. The interment will be in the Lena Valley Cemetery. The casket will be open at the Burdick home all day Sunday and Monday. The news of the death of Abram Childears will bring sadness to hundreds of friends in this section of Kansas. He had a wide acquaintance, and was known best for his uprightness of character and his unswerving stand for the best things in life. He was a good citizen, a faithful friend, and best and kindest of fathers, and his devotion to his daughters and his son was most fully returned and appreciated. To them in their sorrow, is extended the sincere sympathy of all who knew him. -------------------------------------------------- NOTICE. All members of Hancock Post No. 464, G. A.
