Miss Childers had been in failing health for several years, and at different periods had had treatment in other hospitals. She had seemed somewhat improved in the past few days and had sat up part of Thursday. The funeral will be Monday afternoon at 1:30 in the Lena Valley Methodist church, six miles east of Madison, and will be conducted by the pastor of that church [Rev. J. W. Hadky]. Interment will be in the Childers family lot in the Lena Valley cemetery. A brother of Miss Childers, J. J. Childers, of San Francisco, Calif., will arrive in Emporia Sunday evening. The body will be at the McVey-Jones funeral home until Monday. Miss Childers was born on a farm near Lewistown, Ill., October 20, 1868, the daughter of Abram and Sarah Ellis Childers. The family settled in the Lena Valley neighborhood, east of Madison, in 1872. In 1884 the Childers family moved to Emporia where Abram Childers operated a coal business at 214 West street. Miss Childers was graduated from the Emporia High school in 1888, and from the old State Normal school in 1891. She taught her first school in Totonto [KS]. In 1893 she completed a course in special kindergarten work at the Normal. She taught nine months in the Girls' Industrial school, at Beloit. In 1894 she started teaching, as primary teacher, in the schools of Kansas City, Kan., and taught there continuously until 1928. During summer vacations and after retiring, Miss Childers traveled into every state in the Union, into Mexico, Canada and British Columbia. She was seriously sick for many months following her retirement, and early in 1944 went to Madison to live with a cousin, Mrs. Margaret Norton and Mrs. Norton's daughter, Mrs. Nona Phillips. Miss Childers was a member of the Grand Avenue Methodist church, Eastern Star, D.A.R., and other organizations in Kansas City, Mo; and of the National Geographic society, of Washington, D. C. She is survived by a brother, J. J. Childers, Los Angeles, Calif.; five nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
