He was a grand old man, called Uncle Abe. Our grandfather, Abram Overly Clark, was really a construction engineer. He and his crew, including our uncles, built bridges, stations, etc. Our father also worked or the railroad until I was 8 years old. He was a yard man in Minneapolis. Most of my early memories concern trips from Minneapolis to Scranton, Iowa, which we took twice a year - free railroad fare. My mother, Jerene, and I would generally travel at night, and would be met by a swarm of relatives, mostly males. One time, I said to my mother, "Do I have to kiss all those folks?" She replied, "Only grandpa." Fun began as soon as we arrrived. We would visit the place where my grandfather had "parked" his box-car, which was outfitted for housekeeping, and where he and my uncles lived during the week. We had such fun climbing up the ladders on the side of the car. Our grandfather was very strict, and didn't approve of any lollagagging. Yet he told of walking 14 miltes to see a girl and she wouldn't let him in. He was jolly and friendly, and everybody liked him. He always had a bushy white beard. He was interested in medicine, and helped us gather black root, from which we made a tea to take when needed. He also loved to look up relatives where he went.
