Read More	Parents: Adam Baumann & Friedericke Haberlen Obituary Pierce County Call; July 27, 1916 Johann Adam Bauman, was born in Schoenstahl kingdom of Wuttemberg, Germany, on November 20, 1837, and passed away at his farm home southeast of Pierce on July 25, 1916, at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 5 days. He came to the United States in 1864, locating first in Chicago and went from there to Omaha. Here on August 17, 1867, he was married to Barbara Boss. They lived there for four years. In 1870 Mr. Bauman came to Pierce county in company with Nick Wecker and filed on a homestead four miles southeast of Pierce in South Branch precinct. Here a year later he brought his wife, bringing his few belongs with an ox team and emigrant wagon. He was one of the earliest pioneers and suffered many hardships and privations common to the early settlers. He had but two or three dollars when he started from Omaha and depended entirely upon his living from the country as he travelled through and the chance of raising a crop after his arrival. He experienced the terrible blizzards in his little dugout, the ravages of the grasshoppers and many other discouragements common to those days. Mr. Bauman, Capt. Jas. H. Brown, Robt. Lucas and others assisted in the organization of the county and helped to build the first courthouse in Pierce, the lumber being hauled from Wisner by teams of oxen. The settlers in those days use to go to Creighton to get their winter's supply of wood. Mr. Bauman was an upright, God fearing man, a splendid citizen and highly esteemed by all. He is survived by a widow and seven children, three sons and four daughters, viz: Julius, Alfred, Adam Jr., Mrs. August Koerting and Louise of Pierce county, and Mrs. Emil Koerting, of Lincoln, and Mrs. A.F. Kaun of Norfolk. Funeral services were held at the house last Friday afternoon with public services following at St. John's Lutheran church east of town, Rev. H.A. Hilpert conducting the same. Deceased was one of the organizers of this church in an early day. Interment was made in the cemetery nearby.
