Guinn, 91, whose birthday anniversary was on Kansas Day, Jan. 29, died Friday afternoon at the Lockwood home at 812 Schilling Avenue, where she had been cared for since she became seriously ill last Monday. Mrs. Guinn, formerly a school teacher, was consulted by many on pioneer history, for her alert mind made her valuable in this respect. She was fond of telling that she was the first girl to appear in this part of the country with "bobbed" hair. FUNERAL NOTICE: Hiawatha Daily World Saturday, Dec 28, 1935 "Funeral Services for Mrs. Guinn to be Sunday" Mrs. J.B. Guinn, 91, who died Friday afternoon, will be buried Sunday afternoon at Hiawatha Cemetery, following funeral services conducted at 2:30 Sunday at the Baptist Church, bu Rev. James P. Blackledge. Surviving are her son, O.G. Guinn, who assisted her in keeping house, a son, Charles Guinn, of Harrisonville, Mo., as well as several nieces - nephews. Mrs. Guinn was fond of telling that her birthday anniversary came on Jan 29, Kansas Day, and that she was born on the same date as President McKinley, except it was a year later that her birth occurred. Born in western New York, she came to Brown County August 4, 1881. In September of that year she began teaching at Mulberry Rural School. She later taught at Blain, Stony Point, and for a time coached students at her home in Hiawatha, where she lived since 1885. Probably the first girl in Kansas to have "bobbed" hair, she may have had a part in inducing others to wear their hair short. In those pioneer days, her hair was alluded to as "shingled". ---------- Her obituary says that Ornan and Charles Guinn were her sons, but in fact they were her stepsons, the children of John Benton Guinn and his first wife, Elizabeth (Wilhelm) Guinn.
