OBITUARY: Hiawatha Daily World - Monday Jan 28, 1929 Grace Amelia Peek was born in Newark, Wayne County, New York, Feb 1, 1862, and had she lived until the first of next month would have been 65 years old. She received her education in the public schools of New York and in the Newark Academy near her home. At an early age she united with the Baptist Church of Newark. She began her teaching career in New York state, and in 1883 came to Kansas, where her older sister, Mrs. Addie Guinn, was engaged in the same profession. Grace first taught in the Mulberry District, and then in 1884 and 1885 she taught in the old stone school house at Old Fairview, which was at that time a community center for this vicinity. Grace returned to her home in New York, and on December 30, 1885, was married to S.A. Okeson. He brought her to the modest home that he had prepared for her on the present home place. Here they had lived, worked together, and prospered. Here they have expressed themselves in a spacious home, widely known for its hospitality. Here were born to them nine children, six boys and three girls. Two of the boys died in infancy, and George B's tragic death came four years to a day before his mother's. The surviving children are now all in homes of their own. Only a month ago Mr. & Mrs. Okeson celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary, with most of the children and grandchildren present. For five years Mrs. Okeson has been battling heart trouble and high blood pressure. Wednesday morning, shortly after midnight, she awakened with strange feelings. The doctor was called and arrived in 30 minutes, but before he could minister to her the end came. She leaves to mourn her going a devoted husband, three daughters; Mrs. Leslie Haynes, Mrs. H.W. Keene of Lawrence, Mrs. T.B. O'Neil of Ponca City, Ok., three sons, Winn P. of Evanston, Ill., Rex D. and S.A. Jr. of Fairview, nine grandchildren - four girls and five boys, and a sister, Mrs. Addie M. Guinn of Hiawatha. Mrs. Okeson was a home-maker, an inspiring mother, a helpful neighbor and friend, a faithful member of the church, one who was interested in education, libraries, and all uplifting influences and welfare of the community, and was always helpful in so far as her strength would allow. She was wise, tactful, patient, cheerful, and enthusiastic in her strong, quiet way. While a queen in her home, she has filled a large place in our community and her going leaves many vacant places, and many mourning hearts outside of her home circle. With high ideals of doing always her best, she has constantly grown with the years and has been the ideal of many a person within her influence. There is a vacant place in her home, in her church, in her study club, and in her community that no one else can fill. She has lived an unusually successful life, and she has fulfilled her mission. She has gone, but the aroma of her influence is left to bless us all. The world is better for her having lived in it. The funeral was held Friday, Jan 25th at the Fairview Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Hillyer, of Horton, officiating. The body bearers were the three sons and three sons-in-law. Mrs. W.P. Lambertson was in charge of the music. She sang a solo, and a quartet composed of Mrs. Lambertson, Mr. & Mrs. Parman, and Mr. Gear also sang. Miss Elise Lambertson was at the piano. Burial was made in Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
