Description	:	Adeline Cordes was born in 1888 in Blinder, Hannover Province (now Niedersachen Staten) Germany, about 25 miles Southeast of Bremen. The family lived "an hour's drive" from Martfeld. "Lena" was a cousin to Herman, John, Fred, Henry, George and Dick Blume. She came to America with the Herman Blume family. Herman was the last of the Blumes to leave Germany. "Lena" was a cousin to Herman, John, Fred, Henry, George and Dick Blume. She came to America with the Herman Blume family. Herman was the last of the Blumes to leave Germany. They sailed from Bremen Port to New York on the "George Washington" and arrived in the United States in March 1906. The ocean voyage took 10 days. According to Iva Blume Bratsch, many of the passengers were sick but not Lena, who helped care for them. A naturalization record shows the name of John Cordes age 29 born in Blinder, Germany with an application date of April 29, 1908, Lena's brother, who was a mailman and later returned to Germany. Lena first went to live in Redfield, South Dakota with the Fred Blume family and was his daughter Mabel Blume's (later name Mabel Zarneke) roommate and bedmate for some time. Mabel was a few years younger than Lena. Per Mabel, Lena spoke only German but caught on to some English, and they had a good time together. Lena got work at the "Northern Hospital for the Insane" (as it was named at the time, later changed to the "State School and Home for the Feeble Minded"), as a cook. She met Otto Storm soon after that, and Otto may have been working there as well. Lena was 19 and Otto was 21 when their application for marriage was made on October 15, 1907, and they were married October 18, 1907 at the United Church in Tulare, South Dakota by Pastor F. Brennecke. The congregation was primarily German heritage. Fred Blume helped the newlyweds get started up on a farm near Frederick, South Dakota. Son Leonard F. Storm was born there on September 25, 1908, and daughter Mary Storm on July 10, 1910, both on the old Turnquist farm near Frederick. After Lena went into labor with Mary, Otto sent his brother Gust Storm to bring a doctor. There is some information that Gust did not return in time and later, Otto ran for help. There is conflicting information on whether Lena died during childbirth, or whether Dr. Bruner arrived to find her near death, or that she had already passed on. Her death was the same day her daughter Mary was born, from blood loss (there was also reference to "uremic poisoning"). She was buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield, South Dakota two days later, on July 12, 1910. - Written by Carson Storm, August 2018
