He had died on Monday, December 11, in Sioux Falls. Funeral services were at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Robert Wallinga spoke at the funeral service. Te Paske was born on November 28, 1917, in Sioux Center, the son of Anthony and Agnes (Dykstra) Te Paske. He was a graduate of Sioux Center High School, Northwestern Junior College, Hope College and the University of Iowa, where he received a master's degree in political science. He taught at The American College in Athens, Greece, from 1938 to 1940. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, attaining the rank of captain. He was graduated from the Army Staff and Command School and served with the 164th Infantry Regiment in Australia, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Bougainville and the Philippines. After the war, he served in the diplomatic corps for 10 years as a consulate for the U.S. State Department in both Germany and Mexico. On April 6, 1945, he and Yette Ramaker were married in Sioux Center. They moved back to Sioux Center when Del became the executive vice president of First National Bank, serving in that capacity until the time of his retirement in 1979. He and Yette established The Travel Center in 1956 and operated it until 1990. Te Paske loved to read and travel. He also liked gardening and planting trees. During the funeral service, Pastor Wallinga mentioned that Del had hired many Dordt College students to work on his five acres of property adjoining the college. One of the students commented at the time of his graduation, when he was asked what work he had done while a student, said that he had planted about a thousand trees in Sioux Center - 100 for the city and 900 for Del Te Paske! In addition to his community service, Te Paske was a member of Central Reformed Church and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Maurice Te Paske. Interment was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center on Thursday at 9:30 a.m., with the Rev. Joel Bensema officiating. A grandson-in-law, R. Reed, had raised an American flag at the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., where it flew all day in Te Paske's honor on December 12, one day after his death. At the committal service in Sioux Center, Reed and the Te Paskes' grandson, B. Carter, folded the same flag which had flown above the Capitol and presented it to Yette Te Paske. Reed is in the Army, in Washington, D.C.. and he is assigned to the Pentagon. Carter is in the Marines and is stationed in North Carolina. Colleagues and friends described Te Paske as being an exceptionally kind man who was both courteous and interested in their welfare, and also as a man who encouraged excellence in workmanship and in all endeavors. -Partial obituary from The Sioux Center News (12/19/1995)
