In May of 1944, the President of the United States issued Hamilton the Legion of Merit award: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Commander Hamilton Hains, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as staff member with Commander Amphibious Force, South Pacific, from August 1942 to July 1943. Commander Hains participated in the initial occupation of Guadalcanal-Tulagi. He also aided in the occupation of the Russell Islands and that assault on New Georgia, and carried out many extremely difficult and hazardous missions. He is most remembered for his duties as Commander of the escort destroyer USS George. Hamilton was honored by Comdr. E. F. McDaniel as being described as "one of the dogged, determned band of men who wrested Guadalcanal from the Japs and turned then on the road back to Tokyo." Before the war, he married Harriet Govane Ridout Ligon on July 4, 1930 and together had two sons. In 1945, after a water skiing accident, Hamilton suffered a debilitating brain hemorrhage, and retired as Rear Admiral. He and his wife lived most of their lives after WWII on her family estate, White Hall, in Ellicott City, Maryland. Despite his disability, Hamilton lived into his 80s getting to know his two grandsons and one granddaughter before his death in 1990. He was married for 57 years to the love of his life, his devoted and beloved wife "Honey" until her death in February of 1988. "Granddad" is known for his wit and humor despite the brain damage, he would be able to add commentary to conversations happening in his presence. When New Zealand was mentioned, he quickly responded with "Sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep, sheep!" Yes, New Zealand has a LOT of sheep! :) He was also fondly remembered for reminding everyone to "shut the door!" He is missed and loved dearly as he taught us what endurance and patience looks like in the midst of suffering and losing the ability to control your entire body. He also taught his family how to be better listeners of people who have lost the ability to communicate fully, and talk like they used to. Just because someone can't hold a conversation like everyone else - doesn't mean they can't take part in it.
