He served in the German army in the First Prussian Regiment of Artillery in the troublesome years of 1870 and 1871. Read More	Adolph and Sophia (Bock) Thiel New Salem 1883-1983; Page 464 Adolph Gottlieb Erhard Thiel was born on March 5, 1844, in Stephen Kreis Thorin in Russia. He served in the German army in the First Prussian Regiment of Artillery in the troublesome years of 1870 and 1871. Besides his army life he sought adventure on the sea, crossing the ocean 5 times in his earlier life. He was once in a shipwreck where but a few were saved. He came to America in the year 1874 and settled in Elmhurt, Illinois. It was in 1881 that he married Sophia Bock, who was born on February 11, 1861 at Algersdorf, Germany. She came to Barlett, Illinois in 1878. They made their first home at Bartlett. In 1886 they moved to North Dakota just south of Judson where they took up a homestead. It was during their pioneer life that a prairie fire that started at New Salem, it is suspected that it started from the engine on a train, and burned all the way down to the Heart River taking all of their possessions with it. Once when the family was without flour he walked to Mandan pulling a hand sled to bring back the sack of flour. On their homestead nine children were raised, Mary, William, Gustav, Emma, Max, Alvin, Martha, Mathilda and Fred. All of these children are deceased. Mary, married John Schwinkendorf - they made their home at New Salem. They had 3 children, Eddy (deceased), Selma, living in New Salem and Reynold, living in Minot. William married Edith Wagener - they made their home south of Judson most of their lives. They had 2 children, Mamie, living at Elm Crest Manor and Harvey, living south of Judson. Gustav married Sophia Weichman - they lived in the Judson area. They had 2 children, Marvin, living at Livingston, Montana, and Doris, living south of New Salem. Emma married Herman Hasse - they made their home in the Judson area. They had 5 children, Harold, who is deceased, Midred, living at San Antonio, Texas, Albert, living in Almont, Ivy, living in Beloit, Wisconsin and Elmer, deceased. Alvin married Elsie Nickel - they lived in the Judson area and they had 4 children, Edna, Janet, Mavis and Ralph, all addresses unknown. Martha married Herman Schwartz - they lived in the Judson, New Salem area and they had 5 children, Clarence, deceased, Dorothy, living south of Judson, Lester, deceased, and Harvey, deceased, and Rose, living at New Salem. Mathilda married Grover Bahr - they made their home in the Almont area and they had 5 children, Bernice, Royal, Deloris, Marylin and Orville, deceased. These addresses are also unknown. Fred married Martha Merting - they lived at Judson, had 2 children Warren and Dwayne. Mr. Thiel died at the age of 82 on August 15, 1926 and Mrs. Thiel died at the age of 72 on April 26, 1931.
