He was one of nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Thiel. He came to North Dakota in 1886 with his parents who settled on a Homestead South of Judson. He worked at the John Seethoff flour mill and later hauled mail to the Rosebud and Bluegrass Post Offices. He filed a Homestead Northeast of New Salem near that of his father. He married Edith Ida Wagner at the Bethel United Church of Christ South of New Salem on August 5, 1908. She was born August 13, 1880 at Havanna, Minnesota, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wagner. She was one of six children. She received her education in the Steele County, Minnesota rural schools and graduated from Owatonna High School in 1903. She taught two years in Minnesota rural schools. She came to North Dakota in May 1905, homesteaded South of Judson while teaching in the vicinity. They made their home on his Homestead until 1961 when they moved to New Salem. They had two children - Mamie, who is residing at Elm Crest Manor Retirement Home in New Salem - Harvey who is married to Elda Held and they live near Judson - they had three children, Glenn, Betty and Peggy. Glenn is married to Judith Eckroth - they live in Linton, North Dakota with their two sons, Bruce and Darrick. Betty is married to LeRoy Moltzen - they farm North of New Salem with their three children, Delonnes, Tamara and Kevin. Peggy is married to Rodney Reuther - they live West of Mandan with their two children, Micki Lynn and Bobbi Jo. William Thiel was an active member of the Bethel Church and served on the Spring Valley School Board for 17 years. Mrs. Thiel was also a member of Bethel Church and served as Treas. of the Ladies Aid for 10 years. She was also a member of the County Council for two years. Mr. Thiel died on January 26, 1962 at his home at the age of 78 and is buried at Bethel Cemetery. Mrs. Thiel died on May 22, 1973 at the age of 92 and she too is buried at Bethel Cemetery. She spent the last two years of her life at Marion Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin, North Dakota.
