Description	:	Agatha A. Shannon, age 95, of Winner, South Dakota, died on Sunday, July 30, 2006 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center. Agatha was born on June 29, 1911 in Knox County, Nebraska, the first child of Alfred and Agnes Barton's eight children. She spent most of her early years in the Royal, Nebraska area and graduated from Royal High School in 1928 at the age of 17. Read More	Agatha A. Shannon, age 95, of Winner, South Dakota, died on Sunday, July 30, 2006 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center. Agatha was born on June 29, 1911 in Knox County, Nebraska, the first child of Alfred and Agnes Barton's eight children. She spent most of her early years in the Royal, Nebraska area and graduated from Royal High School in 1928 at the age of 17. She attended Wayne State Normal, received her teaching certificate and began teaching at the age of 18. She was married on September 16, 1933, in Lake Andes, South Dakota to Clyde E. Shannon of Gregory, South Dakota, residing in Gregory until 1944, when they moved to Winner. Agatha was an active community member, both in business and in organizations. She operated a café on Main Street, a coffee shop at the Tripp County Courthouse, taught in numerous country schools and at Westside School in Winner, and opened a gift and rock shop in her home. Every year she gave guided tours of her rock collections for schools, organizations and individuals, helping them to identify specimens, their origin and explaining the art of rock collecting. Her contributions to the community have been many and varied throughout her lifetime. She was a charter member of the VFW ladies auxiliary, she was a founding member of Friends of the Library, an instructor for "Art in the Park" for several summers, a cashier at the American Legion and the VFW during their steak nights, volunteered as a tax aide for the elderly, presented educational displays at the 4-H learning fair and acted as judge for 4-H events, pursued her love of genealogy during all these years and traced her and her husband's ancestry back to the 1600's. She was a member of the Tripp County Historical Society, the Tripp County Genealogical Society, the Catholic Daughters, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion, Friends of the Library, Tripp County Rockhounds Club, Retired Teacher's Association and many others. She was named "Woman of the Year" by the Town & Country Women's Club in 1988. When day dreaming, she always talked of winning the lottery and spending it on the local children and the local community. She is survived by her children, Michael (Nell) Shannon of Hutchinson, Kansas, Maureen "Sue" Swedlund of Winner, Monte "Red" (Irene) Shannon, Hartford, South Dakota, Max (Janis) Shannon, Humble, Texas and Myra (Lawrence) Bruns, Humble, Texas; 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; her brothers Edmund Barton, Jack Barton and her sister Dorothy (Marvin) Schuett, many cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, parents Alfred and Agnes Barton, brothers, Thomas Barton, Frank Barton, Wilfred Barton and Silas Barton; grandsons, Larry Wayne Shannon and Thomas Patrick Shannon and great-grandchild, Destiny Hulett. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2006 at 10:30 AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner. Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery. Arrangements by Mason Funeral Home.
