Skaarland, 90, of Livingston and former Big Timber resident died Saturday morning, September 6, 2008, at Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber. She was born December 31, 1917, in Big Timber, the daughter of Norwegian immigrants Ole and Anna (Asvald) Hegdal. After attending Swamp Creek School she attended high school in Columbus and graduated from Sweet Grass County High School in Big Timber. During her youth, she helped her parents on their ranch and also worked on other area ranches including Old Kaintuck Dude Ranch on the Boulder River south of Big Timber. On June 3, 1939, she married Elmer C. Skaarland in Big Timber. The couple moved to Neihart, Montana where Elmer worked in the silver mines. The family settled in Livingston after WWII where Elmer worked for the railroad. Agnes was kept busy at home, keeping house and raising their eight children. Elmer died in January of 2003. Agnes enjoyed fishing, trapping, and working with horses. She was a member of Ameican Lutheran Church and the Luther Circle in Livingston; Orient Chapter #6, Order of Eastern Star; The Sons of Norway; Amy Downing Lodge #162 United Transportation Union Trainmen Ladies Auxiliary; and the Big Sky Snowriders. Survivors include five sons, Alfred (Judy) Skaarland of Lake Tapps, Wash., Lawrence (Brenda) Skaarland of Whitefish, Mont., Leslie (Kathy) Skaarland of Lewiston, Idaho, Dennis Skaarland of Livingston, and Roger (Bonnie) Skaarland of Apache Junction, Ariz.; three daughters, Irene Ballew of Livingston, Ellen (Ron) Barron of Big Timber, and Marge (Denis) Brandon of Livingston; four sisters, Margit Becken, Olga Volderg, Borghid Telrand, and Alma (Telmer) Terland, all of Big Timber; numerous granchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-granchildren and nieces, and nephews. In addition to her husband, Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Clara Ann Skaarland; three brothers, Arnold, Elmer and George Hegdal and a grandson, Nickolai Skaarland.
