Elmer was born December 8, 1919, in Big Timber, the son of Abel C. and Clara F. (Kloehn) Skaarland. He spent his early life and attended school in Big Timber. His family home was adjacent to the Orchard Farm dairy operation, and Elmer began working at the dairy at an early age. Skaarland, 83, of Livingston died at Livingston Memorial Hospital Saturday evening, January 25, 2003. Elmer was born December 8, 1919, in Big Timber, the son of Abel C. and Clara F. (Kloehn) Skaarland. He spent his early life and attended school in Big Timber. His family home was adjacent to the Orchard Farm dairy operation, and Elmer began working at the dairy at an early age. He capped quart bottles for a nickel each, and when he was a little older he took on other jobs including delivering milk around Big Timber using a team and wagon, bringing in the cows and driving the (?) horse during having operations. After acquiring more farming skills he then worked on meat farms and ranches for a time On June 3, 1939, he married Agnes L. Hegdal in Big Timber. The couple over to Neihart, where Elmer worked in the silver mines. He later worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and was involved in the construction of the high bridge over the Gardiner River east of Mammoth in Yellowstone National park. On February 16, 1945, Elmer entered the U. S. Army and served with the 33rd Division Headquarters Company in the Asiatic-Pacific campaign during WWII. At the close of the war, he was stationed in Japan with the Army of Occupation. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Elmer and his family settled in Livingston where he worked with the Northern Pacific Railroad, and later the Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1979 he retired as a conductor after 39 years of service. Elmer was a member of the American Lutheran church in Livingston, was a Past Master of Livingston Lodge #32, A.F.& A.M., a 32nd Degree member of Livingston Scottish Rite Bodies, a member of Orient Chapter #6, Order of Eastern Star, and Sergeant Tommy Ray Post #2154, V.F.W. Survivors include his wife Agnes F. Skaarland of Livingston, five sons, Alfred Skaarland and his wife, Judy of Sumner, Wash., Lawrence Skaarland of Whitefish, Leslie Skaarland and his wife Kathy of Lewiston, Idaho, Dennis Skaarland of Livingston and Roger Skaarland and his wife Bonnie of Apache Junction, Ariz.; three daughters, Irene Ballew of Livingston, Ellen Barron and her husband Ron of Big Timber and Marge Brandon and her husband Dean of Livingston, a brother Kenneth Skaarland and his wife Winnie of East Helena, two sisters, Gladys Strom and her husband, Norm Townsend and Hazel Smasne and her husband Hank of Richland, Wash., 25 grandchildren numerous great-grandchildren four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant daughter, Clara Ann Skaarland, and a grandson Nikolai Skaarland. Funeral services were at 11 a.m, Thursday, January 30 at American Lutheran Church in Livingston. The Rev. Roger Churness officiated. Graveside committal with masonic and military honors and burial were at 2:30 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber. Arrangements were under the direction of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston.
