Read More	Katharine (Katy) Doyle Spann, a longtime Napa Valley resident and activist, as well as a former Advertising Woman of the Year, passed away May 19 in San Francisco after suffering a stroke. She was 85. Born in Holton, Kan., to a ranching family, Katy first came to California as a stewardess for TWA after having graduated with honors with a business degree from Emporia State Teacher's College in Emporia, Kan. She left TWA to work for an advertising agency in San Francisco and subsequently married Hugh John Spann and had a daughter, Susan Katharine Spann. An early career woman, Katy raised her daughter while pursuing an advertising career. She rose to the position of principal and vice president of Bozell & Jacobs, Inc., an international marketing, public relations and advertising agency in San Francisco. Early in her career, Spann spearheaded the K.O. Polio Program of Northern California, which immunized 77 percent of the population in a single day. The program became the prototype for a national immunization campaign. She was made Advertising Woman of the Year and awarded two Silver Anvils by the Public Relations Society of America, the only Westerner to receive such recognition at the time. Spann is listed in "Who's Who of the World," "Who's Who in America," and "Who's Who in the West." In the 1960s, she established Napa Valley as a weekend residence and planted a vineyard while continuing her advertising and public relations career in San Francisco. In the 1970s, Spann started her own agency, concentrating on the health care field, and moved her office to Napa Valley. She became active in land use activities, with a focus on maintaining the agricultural nature of the Valley. In 1981, she served as the marketing and communications director for the first Napa Valley Wine Auction, positioning the Napa Valley as an endangered national treasure. For the first time, feature and business writers, as well as food editors, covered the wine industry in the main news sections of papers and magazines nationwide. In the 1990s, Spann became a member of the board of trustees of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. She also served on the board of several Napa Valley groups, including the St. Helena and Calistoga Boys & Girls Clubs and the Napa Valley Opera House. She was an Officer Commandeur of the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin of San Francisco, the only woman officer of the world-wide wine tasting organization. Katy was an energizing force in the lives of her many friends -- catalyzing information of various groups, including the Napa Valley Women in Wine, the Napa Valley Friends of the Fine Arts Museum's Curator Lecture and Fund-Raising Program, and a swim-exercise group. Katy was an avid hiker, gardener and traveler. She lived life to its fullest, always looking forward to the next adventure. Spann is survived by her daughter, Susan Spann, of Berkeley; brothers, John Edward Doyle of Hampton, Va. and Joseph Leo Doyle of Holton, Kan.; a sister, Rita Shelley Spann, of Prescott, Ariz.; and her many good friends. Friends are invited to a memorial Mass June 11, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the St. Helena Catholic Church, 1340 Tainter St., St. Helena. Burial was at the Holy Cross Cemetery, St. Helena.
