Mrs. Kearns died Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Granite County Nursing Home where she had lived since July. She was born on June 4, 1901, in Granite to Irish parents Patrick and Grace (McGee) McGarvey. The family moved to Philipsburg in 1905 and settled on a ranch south of town. She attended local schools and graduated from Granite High School in 1919. She also attended Butte Business College. Mrs. Kearns began working at the First State Bank in 1920 for the late Lawrence Hauck. She continued working for the bank when the name was changed to Flint Creek Valley Bank. She retired in 1972 from the auditing department, but continued to work part-time at the bank as an auditor until 1981. She and Irish immigrant Joseph A. Kearns married on June 15, 1927, in Philipsburg. He died in 1963. She was a member of St. Philip's Catholic Church, St. Philip's Altar Society and the Philipsburg Senior Citizens. She loved to play cards, especially bridge, and belonged to several local card clubs. She loved to travel, especially by bus. She traveled throughout the United States and even visited Alaska and Hawaii. In 1981, she and her sister Mary traveled to Ireland to visit relatives and to see the home of their parents. She loved children and was a devoted "grandmother" to many. She also was an avid Prospectors fan and was named Royal Fan of the Year. Survivors include nieces, Mary Kay Westphal of Great Falls, Sadie Aspholm of Anaconda and Virginia O'Gara of Butte; nephews, Cecil Sharkey of Philipsburg, Edward Otto of Missoula, Christian Brother Patrick Moore of York, England, and Russell Mellen of Missoula. She was preceded in death by her husband; her brother, Pat Sharkey; and three sisters, Mary Moore, Alice Otto and Kitty Mellen. Memorials are preferred to a charity of the donor's choice.
