Reemtsma of Ventura, Iowa; Mrs. Elsie Ryan of Eau Claire,Wis.; Mrs. Carrie Schwichtenberg of Goodell, Iowa. On Jan. 1, 1909 hiswife died, leaving him and his three children to mourn her all too earlydeath. In 1912 he was married again, this time to Mrs. John Bruns ofAplington, who preceded him in death a little over a year ago. Besideshis children he is mourned by seven grandchildren, ten stepchildren, twosisters, and two brothers. Since 1906 the departed was a member of theBaptist church, first in George, Iowa, since 1912 of the church here atAplington. Mr. Reemtsma was a man of whom any community might be proud,and his many friends will sorely miss him. Yet the ravages of anincurable disease began to tell on him, and for him death was adeliverer. Funeral services were held at the Aplington Baptist church onThursday, May 23rd, the Rev. H. Lohr of Corona, S.D., former pastor ofthe local baptist church; the Rev. Carl Swyter, long time friend of thedeparted; and the present pastor of the local Baptist Church, the Rev.Fred Lehr, officiating. Interment was made in the Pleasantview Cemetery. ----------------------- Card of Thanks The children of the late Aielt J. Reemtsma desire to express their deepappreciation to the many friends for their kind expression of sympathyand the many kindnesses shown them during the illness and at the time ofthe death of their father. ***** From the "HANCOCK, IOWA COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK" ------------ REEMTSMA, AIELT J. Aielt J. Reemtsma was born December 15, 1868 in Groothusen, Germany. He had at least two brothers and two sisters. In 1882 he came to America and settled first on a farm near Ackley, Iowa. In 1894 he married Dena Behrends of Ackley and while living at Rushmore, Minnesota, three children were born to this union, Ben (Bernt) A., Elsa and Carrie. Dena (Behrends) was born August 18, 1869 to Behrend and Hiska, (Penning)Behrends. When she was age 18 she began to teach rural school and taught for eight years. She died January 2,1909 at George, Iowa. She and Aielt became members of the Baptist Church at George, Iowa, in 1906. In 1912 Aielt married Mrs. John Brunes of Aplington, Iowa. She was the mother of ten children, Norman Phillip, Eleanor Theodore Harriet, Lois,Jennie, Rose, Herman and Bertha. At that time Aielt was a member of the Baptist Church at Aplington. Mrs. (Brunes) Reemtsma died in 1934 and on May 20, 1935 Aielt died.Burial of Aielt Reemtsma was at Pleasantview Cemetery. Ben (Bernt is correct first name) A. Reemtsma, oldest child of Aielt and Dena (Behrends) Reemtsma was born December 29, 1895. He received hise ducation in country schools in areas where he lived. He received his degree in auctioneering in Chicago in 1916. On February 5, 1917 hemarried Bena Lindaman at Aplington, Iowa. She was the daughter of Henry(born June 11, 1859, died January 25, 1928) and Elizabeth (Janssen)Lindaman (born September 20, 1863, died November 18, 1904). Bena was born September 20, 1893. After Ben and Bena were married they lived one year at Charles City, Iowa, then moved to Klemme, Iowa, where Ben worked at the lumber company and auctioneered. They lived on a farm east of Klemmein 1921 and in 1922 they moved to a form west of Klemme then to Venturain 1932. He then partly retired to an acreage on the edge of Garner in1938. He, however, kept on with auctioneering until about a year before his death. He and Bena (Behrends) were parents of two daughters, Ivadell(Mrs. John) Abele, Garner, and Beverly (Mrs. Jack) Greiman, Garner.Ivadell and John have six children, Marby, Brent, Nile, Adree, Jill and Thad. Brent died April 19, 1988. Beverly and Jack have three sons,Randall, Scott and Mark. Ben's wife, Bena, died May 15, 1943 and isburied at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Ben married Ruth (Mrs.George) Bemis of Garner. Ruth Ann was the daughter of Mrs. Bemis. On September 30, 1960 Ben died after a lingering illness and in about 1950 Ruth died. Ben is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City and Ruth is buried at Concord Cemetery, Garner. Elsa, second child of Aielt and Dena (Behrends) Reemtsma, was born April 16,1898 at Rushmore, Minnesota. On October 6, 1920 she and Frank Ryan,son of James and Agnes (Murphy) Ryan were married at Holy Family CatholicChurch, Mason City, Iowa. To this union was born a son, Joseph Francis,on October 15, 1924. Joseph died January 31, 1965 and is buried atElmwood- St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City. Frank Ryan was born May 13,1894 at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. After his marriage to Elsa they lived at EauClaire, Wisconsin where he worked as a salesman for Folgers CoffeeCompany. In 1940 he began as salesman at Meier Wolf Furniture Store,City and later he was manager of Anderson Furniture Store, Mason Cityuntil he retired in 1964. He died June 2, 1966 and Elsa died May 12,1984. They are buried at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City. Elsie was very good with gardening, embroidery and crochet. She was busy with church circle and as president of Holy Family Guild during the 1940s and 1950s. Joseph, Elsa and Frank's son, married Ardus Loberg on July 20,1949. They have five children, Tom, Dan, Jun, Kathleen and Barbara.Joseph and Ardua have five grandchildren. Carrie, youngest daughter of Aielt and Dena was only eight years old when her mother died. She lived part of her young life with hergrandparents, the Behrends, and then with her father after his marriageto Mrs. Brunes in 1912. When 16 she worked as a mothers helper in area homes and in homes in the Waterloo area. She was working for Mrs. William Nuehring when she met her future husband, David Schwichtenberg, Mrs.Nuehrings brother. They were married August 27,1919 following his discharge from WWI military service. They began married life on a farmand she did whatever work was needed. She gardened, preserved foods,quilted, embroidered, raised all kinds of poultry and milked cows. She raised breeding stock turkeys, shipping some to Minnesota and Wisconsin and all around Iowa. She sold hatching eggs (one year, 1925, 193 dozen brought $63.73) and would hatch 220 chicks or poults in an incubator for neighbors. By the end of 1945 her daughters, Jean and Viola were ontheir own and sons, John and Jesse, were in military service. In 1946 she and David sold out, rented the farm land, and moved into a Gruetzmacher home on Rockefeller Street in Klemme. Carrie became more active in the Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She held offices inboth organizations locally and was elected president of the HancockCounty American Legion Auxiliary in 1957. She still had a large vegetable and flower garden. Her arborvitae hedge furnished evergreen for Memorial Day wreaths for many years. On May 10, 1966 Carrie passed away at the Belmond Hospital. She is buried in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. by Ivadell Abele
