She is survived by a son, Gramling McGill and his wife, Bobbie of Durham, a daughter-in-law, Nena McGill, of York, Pa., seven grandchildren, Debbie McGill and Linda McGill, of Durham, Deanna Livingston, Susan Seiple, and Julie Kopp, of York, Pa., Martha McGill of Lakewood, Co and Andrew McGill, II of Berlin, MD., four great grandchildren, Anna Burroughs, of Durham, Blake Livingston, Amy Seiple and Jay Kopp, of York, Pa. Born January 18, 1899 in Orangeburg, SC, she was a daughter of the late Fred H. and Rosa Miller Gramling, and widow of the late Ira Leon McGill, Sr. She received a B.A. degree from Columbia College in 1918 and a M.A. from UNC Chapel Hill in 1926. from 1918-1922 she was employed with the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington DC. From 1925-26 she voluntarily died statistical reports on forty years of crime and court records in the 100 counties in North Carolina for the Department of Crime and Correction in Raleigh. For 44 1/2 years she taught mathematics at Lumberton High School, Laurinburg High School and later Scotland High School, retiring in 1969. She also served as principal at Lumberton High School and Laurinburg High School, both while also teaching. She organized the first student participating organization at Laurinburg High School, now Scotland High School and co-authored the first student handbook of rules and regulations. She was the coordinator for Scotland High School's first study and preparation for membership in the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges, and was the chair of the math department at Scotland High School. Mrs. McGill was also a longtime Sunday School teacher at the First United Methodist Church, she chaired and taught Foreign and Home Missions Studies, served on the Board of Stewards, was a delegate to the Eastern North Carolina Conference, a member of the Edwin Gibson Sunday School Class, and was a life member of the United Methodist Women. She served as a volunteer of the American Red Cross Blood Mobile,and with the Scotland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she logged more than 1500 hours of volunteer work. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Argyll Room, Scotia Village.
