"Ab" MELTON, 72, died at 8:21 a.m. Saturday at his 2919 Barrett Road residence. He was in failing health for the past year. Born in McRoberts, Ky., to Bernard and Sylvia SKIDMORE MELTON, he married Betty J. LYTLE GROGG April 6, 1956. She died Feb. 16, 2001. Mr. Melton came to Rochester from Traverse City, Mich., 19 years ago. He was a tool and die maker, retiring in 1993 from United Technologies, Traverse City, Mich., after 26 years. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, Traverse City, Mich., the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 852, both of Rochester, AM-VETS Post 120, Mesick, Mich., and the American Legion, Rochester. He was a Korean War veteran serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an American sportsman who enjoyed rabbit and mushroom hunting and fishing on the sparkling waters of Lake Manitou. He was a 1948 Rochester High School graduate. Survivors include four brothers, Kenneth [MELTON], Copemish, Mich., Tom [MELTON] and wife Eileen, Doniphan, Mo., Gene [MELTON] and wife Sharri, Rochester, and Harold [MELTON], Brownsburg; one brother-in-law, Harvey NICKEL, Rochester; one sister-in-law, Mary MELTON, Rochester; one stepson, Douglas GROGG and wife Cathy, Rochester. Preceding in death with his wife were his parents, one sister, Vandetta Nickel, and one brother, Curtis Melton. Services are at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with Mr. Tom MELTON officiating. Burial will be at Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Visitation is 3:30-7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour prior to services. The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct military graveside rites.
