Olson Road, Rochester, died at 3:20 a.m. Saturday at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City, Mich., where he was a patient for two weeks. Born in McRoberts, Ky., he was the son of Bernard and Sylvia Skidmore Melton. His family moved from McRoberts to Rochester when he was 5 years old. Gene was a proud member of the Rochester High School Class of 1952. Soon after graduation, he answered the call of his country, serving with the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1956. After returning home from Taiwan, he began his tenure with the Rochester Fire Department. His career as a professional firefighter spanned just over three decades. From 1980-1987, he served our department as chief. He regarded his colleagues as sons and brothers and many times could be found in the kitchen or on the grill cooking a variety of wild meats for their evening dinner. Locals will also remember him working for Burton Plumbing & Heating, AIRVAC and Fulton County Beverage over the years. Gene married Sharyn "Shari" Robison on June 8, 1991, at First Christian Church, Rochester. She survives at home. A noted nature lover and man of all seasons, Gene was an avid mushroom hunter, scouring undisclosed area locations. He also ventured to Wisconsin, Michigan and the U.P., joyously recovering pounds of these delectable treats he would share with his family and special friends. He enjoyed all types of hunting – rabbit, squirrel and river turtles. With great pride, Gene remembered being in the company of grandson Evan, when he bagged his first deer. Gene taught his grandsons and nephews about nature. Whether it was a lesson on hunting protocol or tree identification, he was ready to share his knowledge. Annually, Gene and Shari planted a truck patch garden. Flanking the gardens was part of Gene's reforestation efforts – an array of fruit trees including cherry, peach, pear and various apples. At harvest time for all fruits and vegetables they shared their bounty with neighbors, friends and family. Gene annually planted a variety of gladiolus, day lilies and tulips in gardens surrounding their home. These beautiful flowers exploded with color during the late spring until late autumn. When the grandchildren sang in music programs, Gene was there to support them. He was always there cheering at baseball and football games. Many will remember his spirited enthusiasm as he expressed, "Attack the ball!" to the defensive teams. Gene leaves behind his loving wife, his children and grandchildren who adore him, fellow firefighters and friends to cherish the memories of the many good times they shared. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Tomi Brock and husband Ron, Mitzi Burton and husband Craig, all of Rochester, and Anjanette Grosvenor and fiancé Michael Paul, Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Doug Biggs and wife Kelley, Rochester, and Gregg Biggs and wife Robin, New Palestine; nine grandchildren, Evan, Ivy and Shannon Brock, Abbagail and Katie Burton, Katelyn and Jadyn Biggs, Graham and Avery Biggs; one great-grandson, Ethan Brock; three brothers, Thomas Melton and wife Eileen, Donathon, Mo., Kenneth Melton, Copnish, Mich., and Harold Melton, Indianapolis; a sister-in-law, Mary Melton, Rochester; three special nephews, Mark Melton, Greg Melton and Danny Melton, and numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins; and his canine companion, Sassy, his loving terrier. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vandetta Nickells and husband Harvey; two brothers, Curtis Melton and Albert Melton; and granddaughter Aaryn Marie Biggs on Sept. 20, 1996. A celebration of life for Mr. Phillip "Gene" Melton will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., (Indiana 14 West), Rochester. Gene's brother, Mr. Thomas Melton, and RFD chaplain Bill Chappel will host his service. He will be laid to rest at Rochester's IOOF Cemetery. Full fireman's honors will be accorded by the Rochester Fire Department and fellow firemen of our region. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post and by the Manitou VFW Post. Friends may visit with his family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the service. Preferred memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Rochester Fire Department, Fulton County Hunters Education or the American Diabetes Association.
