Albert passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at a hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Albert Schamens was born March 19, 1924 at home near Bryant, South Dakota, the son of Orlin and Abbie (Janssen) Schamens. He spent his early years in rural Hamlin County and attended Dixon #3 school where he graduated from the eighth grade. In 1939, the family moved west of Grover and he started working at the cheese factory in Grover and for area farmers. In January of 1944, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and went to San Diego, CA for boot camp. He served as a rifleman and barber during World War II on Guam and Iwo Jima. In March of 1945, he was seriously wounded in combat and sent to recover in Hawaii before returning to Guam for additional service. He received two purple hearts for injuries sustained in proud service to his country. Later he became a member of the Vienna American Legion and Marine Corp League – ‘Semper Fi'. When the war ended and he was discharged, Albert returned to South Dakota and started his farming operation in 1946. He met the love of his life, Doris Kettwig, and they were married on August 29, 1948. They lived north of Hazel until 1976 when they moved into a new home Albert had built south of Grover. In 1986 they moved to Hazel, where he served on the town board from 1987 to 2005 and served as mayor. He was a member of the Hazel Senior Citizens. He served on the Hazel School Board and the Kampeska Township Board. He was instrumental in the development of the Eastern Dakota 4-H Rodeo and served as president. He was the catcher for the Grover Softball Team as well as the neighborhood barber. He was a member of the Grover Emmanuel Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed and married. He was church president, trustee and served on the church board. Albert was an avid hunter; he especially enjoyed the pheasant hunts with family and friends. His lifelong work as a farmer never ended as he continued to help with field work until his death. Woodworking was his hobby and he enjoyed making gifts for special occasions. He always loved a good game of cards. Albert truly enjoyed his family particularly his grandchildren and great-granddaughters. He made the Christmas celebrations special by cooking oyster stew and churning homemade ice cream. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Doris, of Hazel, SD and their children: Dianne Rider and her husband, Jon, of Hazel, SD; Harley Schamens and his wife, Beverly, of Vancouver, WA and Kathy Monnens and her husband, Tony, of Hazel, SD; eight grandchildren; three great granddaughters; two brothers: Orvil Schamens and his wife, Dorine, of Washington City, UT; Charles Schamens and his wife, Phyllis, of Watertown, SD; three sisters: Ada Hanson and Evelyn Moeller both of Canby, OR and Jean Parrett of Portland, OR; one sister-in-law, Virgina Schamens, of Hastings, NE as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James Schamens, and two sisters: Alice Moeller and Ethel Sondergaard. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Chapel.
