He was born Oct. 1, 1922, in Carrollton, Ky., the son of Melvin and Ollie Sutherland Knox. He lived in Switzerland County most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Knox, 84, of near Moorefield, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at King's Daughters' Hospital. He was born Oct. 1, 1922, in Carrollton, Ky., the son of Melvin and Ollie Sutherland Knox. He lived in Switzerland County most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired in 1986 after 23 years as a civilian gunner at Jefferson Proving Ground. He worked at the U.S. Shoe factory in Vevay from 1951 to 1966. He also enjoyed farming. He was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post 185, Switzerland Lodge 122 F&AM and the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. He is survived by two sons, Dennis Knox of Moorefield and Michael Knox of Indianapolis; one brother, Charles Knox of Vevay; two sisters, Clara Shreves of California and Mary Alice Scudder of Vevay; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma Jean Burnett Knox, whom he married Aug. 2, 1947, and who died Aug. 18, 1993; one brother, Willie D. Knox on Jan. 26, 1996; and one sister, A. Dorothy Knox on April 8, 2006. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home. Burial will be in Vevay Cemetery, where the honor guard of the Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Vevay VFW Post 5396 will conduct military rites. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Switzerland Lodge 122 F&AM will conduct a service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. He married Norma Jean Burnett on Aug. 2, 1947 in Vevay. He retired in 1986 after 23 years as a civilian gunner of the Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison. He was a former employee of the U.S. Shoe Factory in Vevay from 1951-1966. He enjoyed farming. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 7, 1942, at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind., rising to the rank of Private First Class of Battery B 780th Field Artillery Battalion. He served during World War II, receiving the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one bronze star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star and the Good Conduct Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 22, 1946, at Camp Atterbury, Ind. He was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post 185, Switzerland Lodge 122 F& AM and the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. Survivors include two sons, Dennis Knox, Moorefield, Ind. and Michael Knox, Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, Charles Knox, Vevay; two sisters, Clara Shreves, California, and Mary Alice Scudder, Vevay; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife who died Aug. 18, 1993; a brother, Willie D. Knox who died Jan. 26, 1996; and a sister, A. Dorothy Knox who died April 8, 2006.
