| Description | : | Born to Jacob and Gertrude Baas, the 2nd of 10 children (photo). When he was 10 years old (1905), the family moved to Litchville, Iowa and then to Marion, Iowa in 1907. At age 23, Grandpa enlisted as a private in the Army, just in time to serve during World War 1. He entered Camp Custer in Pontiac, Michigan on May 14, 1918 for training and was shipped overseas to France aboard the U.S.S. Nebraska.
