(Bert) Westlake, of 307 West 12th Avenue, died yesterday afternoon at Enloe Hospital after a lengthy illness. "Mr. Westlake was born near Ashland, Ore., on Jan 2, 1890. The family moved to Chico in 1892. He had resided here continuously except for short periods between 1916-1920. "He attended public schools in Chico. He went to work for the Diamond Match Company as an apprentice in the sash and door department and was promoted to machine set-up man in 1919, then promoted to foreman of the door department, in 1921, being the youngest... The family moved to Chico in 1892. He had resided here continuously except for short periods between 1916-1920. "He attended public schools in Chico. He went to work for the Diamond Match Company as an apprentice in the sash and door department and was promoted to machine set-up man in 1919, then promoted to foreman of the door department, in 1921, being the youngest foreman ever employed by the company. "The company had closed their manufacturing plant during 1916-1920 and he did planing and moulding mill work. He returned to Diamond Match in 1920 to help install the machines and take charge of the upkeep, production and teaching others the work. He taught many men to go on and accept positions with other companies. "He married Ethel Thrush on June 24, 1910. Illness forced him to retire in March, 1955. He suffered a heart attack in May. Mrs. Westlake died in November, 1955, after 46-1/2 years of marriage. He later married Mrs. Effie Graven Norris. "He leaves his wife, Effie, and six children, Melvin, Irvin, Mrs. Dorothy Beebe and Wilma Rowe, all of Chico; Wendell and Eldon of Garden Grove; 17 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, two stepdaughters and five step-grandchildren in Minnesota. "Also surviving are a brother, Richard; three sisters, Mrs. Roy Snowden and Mrs. Frank Cooley of Chico, and Mrs. Jack Francis of Sacramento, and several nieces and nephews. "Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Chico Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Riddell of the First Christian Church officiating.
