Holt, son of August and Lizzie Holt, was born Sept. 18, 1883. When he was nine years old his father died. Thus, it became necessary for him to accept the responsibilities of life at an early age and by the time he was sixteen, he was doing a man's work. With his mother and brother, he came to South Dakota in 1909. He and his mother came to Carlton in 1919. In 1913, he was converted and united with the Baptist church at Dennison, Iowa. Later he transferred his membership to the Carlton M. E. church and lived a consistent Christian life to the end. On June 22, 1920, he was united in marriage to Miss Clara Morgan and together they established a home, which has been noted for its Christian hospitality and friendliness. This happy union was blessed with three daughters, Jane, Helen and Isabelle, and one son, Vernon. He always took an active interest in the civic, social and religious life of the community, and the community is better because he has been a part of it. He served in the township board, the church board, in various offices of the farmers' union and as superintendent of the Sunday school. As a neighbor he was never too busy to lend a hand to any one who was in need. He shared the sorrows and griefs of the entire community and many time he lightened the burdens of others by his kind words of hope, encouragement and cheer. He was a kind thoughtful, affectionate son and husband, and a true friend. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and four children, his aged mother who made her home with him.
