He was 79 years. Al was born March 6, 1927 in Lovelock, NV to Albert and Aileen (Freeman) Mitchell, the second of four children. He was born oxygen deprived and was a little slower than most kids. He attended elementary school through @6th grade in Lovelock with his younger brother, Paul as a protector. In 1949 his father who worked as a telegraph operator for the railroad was transferred to Modoc Co., CA and the family moved to the Madeline and Likely, CA areas, before finally moving into Alturas, CA when his father died in 1957. Al resided with his mother until her death in 1981, he then lived by himself, with his brother, Vince checking in on him. He began attending Modoc Work Activity Center and was an active participant. He truly loved going to the Center and the staff and consumers were like his second family. In earlier years, he enjoyed walking, square dancing and pottery. Always an avid sports fan, he liked watching baseball and football and reading the newspapers sports statistics. His favorite football team was the SF 49er's. He never married. In 2003 he became a resident of Modoc Medical Center's Skilled Nursing Facility where he was quick to make friends with fellow residents and staff alike. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed teasing the nurses who cared for him. He leaves sister-in-laws, Donna Mitchell of Weaverville, CA, Karoline (Toot) Nelson of Alturas, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by father, Albert Mitchell in 1957; mother, Aileen Mitchell in 1981; sister, Betty Mae Dahms in 1994; and brothers, Paul Mitchell in 1983 and Vincent Mitchell in 1991. A graveside service was held Dec. 6 at Alturas Cemetery, a reception followed at the Modoc Work Activity Center.
