Funeral services are being held this afternoon under the auspices of the American Legion with burial next to his brother, Roy S. Mitchell, at Lone Mountain Cemetery, Lovelock, Pershing Co., NV. Mr. Mitchell passed away in an Alturas hospital Monday morning after being ill for three weeks. He had been treated at the Southern Pacific Hospital in San Francisco and had returned home when he took a turn for the worse and suffered from an aneurysm. He was born October 11, 1898 in Moro, Sherman County, OR to Abe and Bertha (Fuller) Mitchell. Before 1900 the family moved to Canyon in Klickatat Co., WA. As a young boy his father disappeared from the family and he and his brother Roy were placed in a Portland orphanage, and his sister, Maude was sent to live with an aunt in WA. His mother remarried and the brothers reunited with her at some point. He and his brother, Roy enlisted in WWI @1916. After discharged the brothers moved to Reno, NV and around 1922, he started work for the Southern Pacific Railroad Co., and made it his life work. On July 15, 1923 he married Aileen Freeman of Reno, NV, her father and brother, Andy had both been SP Railroad employees. They had four children and made their home in Lovelock, NV and lived where the residential office of the Garry Lee Trailer court is now located, at the end of 14th Street. Al was a telegraph operator for the SP railroad at Lovelock for 24 years. In 1949 he moved to the Modoc Co., CA division of the company and the family resided in the Madeline and Likely areas, later moving into Alturas. He was still employed by the company when he died, completing 35 years of services. He was highly regarded by all who knew him. On the railroad he was known by his fellow workers as conscientious, accommodating, pleasant to work with and a top notch railroader. He was of the type that is indispensable in successfully operating a great railway. Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of World War I and always had his membership in Lovelock Post No. 6 of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Aileen, sons, Albert Jr., Paul (Donna) and Vincent Mitchell, all of Alturas, CA, daughter, Mrs. Betty (Floyd) Dahms of Amherst Junction, WI, brother, Marion Mitchell of Portland, OR, stepbrothers, Harold and Billy Peterson of WA and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Peterson in 1945, stepfather, Henning Peterson in 1942, brother, Roy Mitchell in 1943 and sister, Mrs. Maudie Mae Tubbs in 1954.
