He was born Sept. 13, 1927, in Burkettsville, to Joseph and Mary Backs Hemmelgarn. On March 22, 1952, he married Ruth M. Stammen who died Jan. 18, 2001. On April 19, 2002, he married Dianne Subler who survives. He was born Sept. 13, 1927, in Burkettsville, to Joseph and Mary Backs Hemmelgarn. On March 22, 1952, he married Ruth M. Stammen who died Jan. 18, 2001. Other survivors are four sons, Dave (Deb), Chuck (Johna), Ken (Joyce) and Tim (Debbie), all of North Star; two daughters, Susan (Terry) Householder, McCartyville, and Donna (Don) Rutschilling, Maria Stein; a stepson, Kevin of North Star; and a stepdaughter, Lisa (Joe) Rush, Versailles. Also surviving are three brothers, Leonard (Berdella) of St. Henry, and Ed (Mary Ann) and Ivo (Doris), all of Dayton; five sisters, Della (Jerry) Halpin and Alma (Joe) Graves, all of Dayton; Bertilla (Paul) Ernst, Pleasant Hill, Calif., Eileen (Harold) Heuker, Minster, and Anna Lee (Jack) Kunkel, Land Harbor, Newland, N.C.; 25 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Deceased are a brother-in-law, Charles Roessner; a sister-in-law, Ruth Hemmelgarn; and a grandchild. He was co-owner of North Star Hardware and Implement and founder of North Star Plumbing. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the American Legion post, North Star, Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks of Greenville and the Catholic Order of Forresters. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, North Star. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, the Rev. David Zink officiating. A military funeral will be conducted by members of the American Legion. Burial is at the church cemetery. Calling is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, St. Henry, and 9-10:15 a.m. Monday at the church.
