Read More	Civil War Veteran Private, Co. I, 18th Massachusetts Infantry Albert Lewis Jordan was the son of Alfred and Sarah L. (Pitcher) Jordan and brother of Samuel H. Jordan, Co. I. As a 25 year old farmer he married Clara D. Thompson, age 15 and the daughter of Sgt. George W. Thompson of Co. I, 18th Mass. Infantry, at the M.E. Church, Cumberland, RI on July 4, 1862. The couple had one child, Clara Etta Jordan, born in 1865 and who died unmarried in 1923. Albert was a 25 year-old Farmer from Franklin, MA, when he enlisted in that town on and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on July 28, 1862 as a Private in Co. I, receiving a $325.00 enlistment bonus. Per muster records, he was 5 ft. 7-1/2 in. tall, with a light complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. He served in the engagements at Antietam, Bobster's Mills, Blackburn's Ford, Shepardstown, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. He suffered a severe gunshot wound to the hip at Gettysburg, PA, the bullet passing first through his wallet and wife's picture before striking flesh and bone. He was discharged from Lovell General Hospital, Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island on May 19, 1864, when he was issued a Certificate of Disability from the Army citing the severity of the wound and that he was not eligible for transfer to the Veterans Reserve Corps. Albert resided in Franklin following his military service, where he was a member of the Franklin G.A.R. Post No. 60. He applied for an Invalid Pension on Nov. 8, 1864 and was awarded initial benefits of $8.00 per month under Certificate 35040, due to disability from his gunshot wound. Albert was plagued for the duration of his life by his wound which failed to heal properly and which constantly oozed pus. He underwent surgery in about 1882 and an examination, under microscope, of matter removed from the wound revealed evidence of threads from his army uniform blouse. Unable to engage in any gainful employment, his disability was deemed equivalent to the loss of a foot and he was awarded increases in benefits at various points until reaching a maximum of $24 per month. Albert was 53 years old when he died of heart disease at Franklin, MA and was buried in the Union Street Cemetery in Franklin. He's buried in the same lot as his wife Clara, daughter Clara Etta, and father-in-law George W. Thompson.
