Baker suddenly died at the home of Miss Ella Perkins on Thompson Street. He started for work the same as usual in the morning, but not feeling well started for home. The community has been greatly shocked by the sudden passing away of Albert D. Smith, which occurred August 30th. He was born in New Hampton April 17, 1858. His early years were spent in Ashland and he also attended school here. He attended the New Hampton Commercial College. In 1886 he married Ella M. Smith and few years later they took up their residence at the Kenrick Smith farm in New Hampton where he lived until his death. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John E. Marsh of New Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Fones and Mrs. Dana W. Carey, both of Ashland; and a brother, William L. Smith of Lexington, Mass. At the age of 14 he proved his faithfulness to his mother, who was then left a widow with five children, by sharing with her the support of the family. In 1912 he was bereft of his wife who passed away suddenly with pneumonia. Early in life he united with the Baptist Church at Ashland and was always faithful in his services for the church. In his home town affairs he was always interested and helpful in having held the office of selectman and other town offices. He was filed for representative in the next general court. In being a member of New Hampton Grange, he found much pleasure and also held offices of trust for that organization. During his entire life his constant thought was for others. His business dealings were marked by judgment, conscientiousness and honesty of the highest type. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, September 2nd. Rev. Arthur E. Cox of New Hampton officiated. A mixes quartet from the Baptist Church of Ashland furnished music. The floral tributes were beautiful. Besides the relatives, many neighbors and many friends were present and the New Hampton Grange attended in a body.
