Packard, one of the leading pioneer citizens of Mandan, died at his home here at 6 o'clock this evening, death ensuing from heart failure. Mr. Packard has been in poor health for more than a year, and had only been able to leave his residence once after he returned from Hot Springs, Ark. last April. Funeral services will be conducted here Sunday morning, the obsequies being held in the opera house, with Bishop Cameron Mann of Fargo, officiating. That evening the remains accompanied by the wife of the deceased, and his nephew F. E. Packard of Bismarck, will be taken to the old home for burial at Renwick, lowa. Born of revolutionary stock Albert Merton Packard came into the world March 28, 1859, in Wright county, Iowa. In 1875 he graduated from the law department of the University of Iowa, and was admitted to practice in North Dakota. He moved to Mandan in 1888, and for a number of years was editor and manager of the Mandan Times. He was at one time a member of the North Dakota legislature, was mayor of the city, and for ten years was register of deeds of Morton county. He was always held in the highest esteem by the citizens of this city, and had a wide acquaintance all over the state. Both Mr. and Mrs. Packard have always been deeply interested in fraternal organizations and the deceased has held for years prominent offices in the lodges of the Knights, of Pythias, Odd Fellows and A. O. U. W. He was also a member of the Mandan Masonic order, and has also been president of the state volunteer fireman's association. As an official and personally he was always an obliging quiet and unassuming gentleman, an ideal citizen and a tower of strength on the side of social and political progress. Packard, aged 50, formerly editor of the Iowa City Republican, is dead at Mandan, N. D. He was formerly mayor of the city, and at the time of his death, county recorder. He also edited a paper there. Surviving is his wife, formerly Miss Georgia Parrott of Iowa City. The remains will be taken to Renwick, Ia., for interment. The Daily Times Davenport, Iowa Tuesday, August 19, 1913 Page 8, Column 3 __________ Albert Merton Packard was born at Luni, Wright County, Ia., March 28th, 1859 and died at Mandan, N. D. Aug. 15, 1913, after having been in failing health for the past four years but continuing at his work as register of deeds until January 1st, 1913 at which time he went to Hot Springs, Ark., for relief, spending the winter there, returning home in May and gradually grew weaker until he passed away, closing a very busy and energetic life having been in public office the greater part of the time he lived in North Dakota. He was for two terms Mayor of the city of Mandan; five terms register of deeds of Morton county; two terms State representative from his district, besides holding other important offices and positions. He was a strong member of the I. O. O. F. lodge, being a charter member of the Renwick lodge transferring to Mandan lodge after moving there. He held the offices of Grand Master and Chief Patriarch and was also Nat’l delegate for his state on different occasions. He attended school at Cedar Falls at the Soldiers Orphans school until he graduated after which he took a course in law at the State University at Iowa City being admitted to the bar in 1884. He united with the Methodist church when a young man and was a member of the same until after moving to Mandan where he united with the Episcopal church of which he was a member until his death. He was untied in marriage Nov. 8, 1885, to Miss Georgia May Parrott of Iowa City. To this union was born one son who died in infancy. Mr. Packard leaves besides his wife two sisters and three brothers to mourn his untimely taking away. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Tuesday forenoon Aug. 19th, conducted by Rev. Nicholson of Goldfield assisted by the local pastor Rev. H. S. Hocking, and the remains were laid to rest in the Luni cemetery at which place his I. O. O. F. Lodge took charge of the services.
