Ross, pioneer farmer, passed away at his home near Lewellen, Monday afternoon, July 11, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 11 days. He had been in failing health for the past two years, and had suffered much during that time. Mr. Ross was born at Big Mound, Lee county, Iowa, on March 30, 1860. He came to Otoe county, Nebraska in the spring of 1884 and in the fall of the same year he migrated to Perkins county which was then a part of Keith county. He homesteaded land and after proving up on the place, he moved to Big Springs in the year 1890. While in Big Springs he was employed by the Union Pacific railroad. On February 15, 1893 he married Miss Sara Clark, who had come west from West Middlesex, Pennsylvania. In 1894 he and his family re-moved to Lewellen where he established his residence and acquired his present farm home in 1900, where the family has since resided. Mr. Ross was elected to serve on the Board of County Commissioners in 1904 and reelected to the same office for a second term in 1907, this being while Garden county was a part of Deuel county. He also served as a member of the Lewellen school board for a number of years and served as precinct assessor. He was active promoting and developing the first irrigation systems which were established in the Lewellen territory. He served as director for the irrigation companies for a number of years. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ross, they being, two daughters, Mrs. Gosner Bergquist of Oshkosh, Mrs. V. L. Larson of Portland, Oregon, and one son, Richard, of Pinedale, Wyo. All three children, with their mother were with Mr. Ross during the last of his illness and at the time of his death. Six grandchildren also survive the deceased. Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, at 2:00 o'clock, at the Lutheran church in Lewellen, of which he was a member.
