On October 4, 1922, he married Alvina Felder in Guttenberg. Mr. Schmelzer is survived by his wife, three sons, Joseph Schmelzer of Garnavillo, Lorin Schmelzer of Monona and James Schmelzer of Guttenberg, and by four daughters, Mrs. Henry Dickman of Garnavillo, Mrs. Lawrence Stroschein of Garnavillo, Mrs. Moser of Elkader and Mrs. Kann of Guttenberg. Also surviving are 35 grandchidren; four brothers, Henry of Garnavillo, Ed of Garnavillo, Har___ of Guttenberg and Otto of Litt_____, and two sisters, Mrs. ___ Rolfes of Garnavillo and Mrs. Fred Maibauer of Pinellas, Fla. The parish rosary was said at ___ last Friday. +++ 1984 History of Clayton County, Iowa, pg. 649 Albert and Alvina Felder Schmelzer Albert and Alvina Felder Schmelzer were married Oct. 4, 1922, at St. Mary's Church, Guttenberg, Ia. by Father J. Brinkman. Albert was the second son of Otto and Anna Lueck Schmelzer, b. April 11, 1891, on the Schmelzer farm one mile south of Garnavillo. He attended St. Joseph's School, Garnavillo, and worked on the home farm until he was inducted into the army during WWI from May 1918 until June 1919. After service he worked for William Berns for several years until he got married. Alvina Felder was b. at Guttenberg, Aug. 15, 1902, the oldest child of Frank and Anna Voss Felder. She attended school at St. Mary's, Guttenberg. After graduation, she worked at Columbia College at Dubuque for several years. After marriage, our first home was on the Herman Nieland farm near Guttenberg for one year, when the farm was sold. Then we moved to the Voss farm, grandparents' of Alvina, for seven years. We then bought a farm one mile west of Garnavillo from Henry Shulte. At least, we were closer to school. We retired to Garnavillo in 1949 and were active members of St. Joseph's Catholic Parish. We have seven children all living in Clayton County. We also have 40 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren and still growing?? Marie m. Henry Dickman, a farmer and they have two children. Mark (deceased) and Reka. They have two grandchildren. Bernadette m. Lawrence Stroschein, a farmer. They have ten children: Joyce, Judy, Larry, Louis, Jean, Lee, Joan, Janice, Lenny and Sandy and there are 14 grandchildren. Joseph, a farmer, m. Anita Rose Berns, a teacher from West Union and they have 13 children: Sam, Dan (deceased), Mary, Mike, Tom, Tony, Tim, Margaret, Susan, Anna, Donna, Ellen, Laura, and eight grandchildren. Leonilla m. Harvey Moser of Guttenberg, a county employee. They have three children: Candy, Randy and Philip and there are two grandchildren. Lorin, a farmer m. Edna Voss, a former telephone operator from Monona. They have five children: David, Linda, Lisa (deceased), Darrell and Allen and there are three grandchildren. Lorin served in the army in the Korean conflict. Geraldine m. Owen Kann from Guttenberg, a farmer and they have ten children: Connie, Roger, Thomas (deceased), Victoria (deceased), Kathy, Julie, Carole, Lisa, Sharon and Kenny. There are eight grandchildren. James, a coordinator at John Deere, m. Shirley Schroeder, a teacher. They have two sons: Scott and Steve. James served two years in the service in Korea. Albert and Alvina retired to Garnavillo in 1949, when Joe and Anita took over the farm. Albert passed away Dec. 9, 1964. Alvina sold the farm in Sept. 1978 and moved to an apartment.
