Description	:	ALBERTA BEATRICE (LAYMAN) CARLSON STROM, 90 years, of Fremont, Nebraska, formerly of Tekamah and Oakland, Nebraska, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 13, 2012, at her home in Shalimar Gardens in Fremont. Alberta was born June 16, 1921, in Phillipsburg, Missouri, the second of three sisters, Juanita and Lena, the daughter of Loran Levi and Mabel Irene (Prosser) Layman. Read More	ALBERTA BEATRICE (LAYMAN) CARLSON STROM, 90 years, of Fremont, Nebraska, formerly of Tekamah and Oakland, Nebraska, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 13, 2012, at her home in Shalimar Gardens in Fremont. Alberta was born June 16, 1921, in Phillipsburg, Missouri, the second of three sisters, Juanita and Lena, the daughter of Loran Levi and Mabel Irene (Prosser) Layman. Her parents relocated east of Herman, Nebraska where another sister, Florence and two brothers, Wilbur and Forest were born. She attended Kindred, Bono and Pleasant View public schools. At 14 years of age, her family moved west of Herman where she then attended Hillcreek and Herman Public High School. On November 5, 1939, she married Sherman Emil Carlson and after briefly living in Battle Creek, Nebraska, relocated to Tekamah, Nebraska, where she lived until after her husband's death on April 25, 1973, at 57 years of age, and 33 years of marriage and is interred at the Tekamah Cemetery. During her marriage to Sherman, she was very active at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for 20 years and participated in the Altar Guild. On September 14, 1974, she married Glenn Nelson Strom, also a recent widower, from Oakland, Nebraska and joined him there on the farm, becoming a stepmother to his 5 children and their families. In Oakland, Glenn and Alberta showed several civic interests, including helping start the Swingaway Square Dance Club with Harold Bausch as caller and square-danced for 14 years. As a fundraiser, they gathered and sold empty pop cans and donated the money they received to "Dogs for the Deaf." Additionally, they helped start the local Wheelin' Sams (Good Sam Club). Driving their truck pulling a fifth wheel trailer, Glenn and Alberta traveled to many of the states visiting friends, family and places of interest. To show where they had visited, they made light blue vests on which they sewed patches from their many travel destinations. Acquiring patches for their vests added to their travel fun. When their traveling days drew to a close, the vests boasted quite an assorted collection of patches, containing mementos from many of the lower states and even including Alaska. In addition to camping, they even had an opportunity to enjoy a honeymoon trip to Hawaii and later, a vacation cruise to Alaska. After over 29 years of marriage, Glenn died on February 7, 2004, at 87 years of age and is interred at the Oakland Cemetery. Alberta enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life, including reading, cooking, sewing and gardening--especially flower gardening, often referring to the flowers as a little bit of "God's sunshine." She is survived by her four children, Doris Jean (Carlson) and husband, Sam L. Edwards, of Pasadena, TX; Shirley Marie (Carlson) and husband, Bob J. Wilson, of Sweet Home, OR; Terry Sherman Carlson and wife, Cynthia A. (Hartshorn) Carlson of Wichita, KS; Sonja Lynn (Carlson) and husband, Kenneth J. Feather, of Waco, NE; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Wilber Layman of Billings, MT; sisters, Juanita Pendergraft of Lebanon, Mo, Lena Jensen of Blair, NE, Florence W. Crowder of Perry, GA; three stepchildren, Mary Ann (Strom) and husband, Arlan Hansen of Blair, NE, Barbara (Strom) and husband, Gale Mahnke of Elgin, NE, Richard Strom and wife, Mary (Lindstrom) Strom; stepdaughter-in-law, Vanessa (Beck) (Mrs. Mark) Strom of Oakland and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Sherman E. Carlson, Glenn N. Strom; brother, Forest Layman; stepsons, Mark & Gary Strom; step grandson, Brian Hansen. Throughout her life she was a loving wife and mother, devoted to her family, her friends and her community. Wherever she went, she was constantly thinking of and doing things for others. She will be sorely missed. The pain incurred from her loss is reduced by knowing that she is with her Maker, basking in His glory, now and forever! Praise be to God! FUNERAL SERVICE: Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 10:30 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah, NE VISITATION: Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Visitation Wednesday will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. BURIAL: Tekamah Cemetery MEMORIALS: May be sent to the funeral home and will be given to a charity in Alberta's name at the family's direction.
