Description	:	Florence Wilma Layman was born and raised in Nebraska. She grew up on farms near Herman, Nebraska, in Washington County. After graduation from high school, she went to work at the Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue, Nebraska, from January until August of 1945. Florence was a riveter on the front spar of B-29 aircraft and was on the assembly line when the plane that would become known as the "Enola Gay" (as well as "Bockscar" and other atomic-capable B-29s) came through the plant. When the war ended, she went to work for an insurance... Read More	Florence Wilma Layman was born and raised in Nebraska. She grew up on farms near Herman, Nebraska, in Washington County. After graduation from high school, she went to work at the Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue, Nebraska, from January until August of 1945. Florence was a riveter on the front spar of B-29 aircraft and was on the assembly line when the plane that would become known as the "Enola Gay" (as well as "Bockscar" and other atomic-capable B-29s) came through the plant. When the war ended, she went to work for an insurance company in Omaha, and re-kindled an old friendship (via letters) with a former Herman schoolmate, Eugene Ralph Hansen, who was training as an officer the U.S. Army Air Forces. Florence and Gene fell in love through the exchange of letters while he was in training followed by a service assignment in Germany. They were married on 10/5/1947, in Fremont, Nebraska, when Gene returned to the Unites States. They moved to Austin, Texas, where Gene continued his service with the U.S. Air Force. He was sent to Itazuke Air Base in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1948, and Florence joined him there in February 1949. Gene was tragically killed in action on July 7, 1950, while flying an F80C fighter jet over South Korea. Florence returned to the United States in August 1950. Gene's remains were recovered in 1951 and after identification were returned to the U.S. for burial in March 1952. In 1953, Florence married C. Dewey Crowder, Jr. and moved to Mobile, Alabama. She and Dewey separated in 1989 and were divorced in 1991. She moved to Perry, Georgia, to be near her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. She remained in Georgia until her passing on October 6, 2017. Obituary from "The Telegraph", Perry, Georgia: Florence Layman Crowder PERRY, GA- Florence Layman Crowder, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 6, 2017. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 9, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Perry Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to Perry Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 574, Perry, GA 31069. Mrs. Crowder was born in Blair, Nebraska, to the late Loran and Mabel Prosser Layman. After graduating from high school, she was a riveter towards the end of World War II, working on the B-29 Front Spar. She also volunteered at the American Red Cross and worked in various sales fields. She was a long-time member of Perry Presbyterian Church. A husband, three sisters, and two brothers predeceased her. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Scott Palmer of Perry; and 2 grandsons, Caleb Britt and Nicholas Palmer.
