Description	:	"Alden Ladley was known to his immediate family and friends as Lad. He was born in Peru, Dubuque County, Iowa. His father was William Doolan McLaughlin (b 1846, d 1924), an American Civil War veteran (Pvt 33rd Wisconsin Volunteers, Company B) and laborer. His mother was Risby Jane Creger (b 1851, d 1932), a housewife and mother to seven children. Lad had two younger sisters, Pearl and Goldie, and four older brothers, Albert, Amos Elmer, Melvin Orlando and Roscoe Lloyd. Lad grew up in Kansas and Nebraska. As a youth, he distinguished himself with his optimistic outlook, fun loving nature and sunny disposition. He maintained these attitudes throughout his life. He was much loved for his playful nature, especially by his nephew, Alvin Fay Christensen, son of his sister, Goldie. At around age 22, he married (about 1907) his German born wife, Marie (b 1884, d 1968) in Nebraska, and they initially made their home in Otoe County, Nebraska. They had one son, Orrin Laverne McLaughlin (b. 1908, d. 1985), who as an adult, pursued a career in the US Army, retiring with the rank of Major. Lad worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, first in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from about 1912, then in Grand Junction, Colorado, from about 1918, until his retirement around 1941. He continued to live in Grand Junction after his retirement with his wife, Marie, until his death in 1958 at the age of 73.
