He was born August 10, 1931, in Ottumwa to Paul E. and Dorothy Sells LeGrande. He married Naomi Hill on October 23, 1954. A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Alex served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for 13 years for the CB&Q Railroad and for 27 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works, retiring in 1990. He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife, Naomi; two daughters, Debbie (Jim) Wilson of Blakesburg and Pam (Dan) Hoffman of Fremont, Nebraska; a son, Phil (Amanda) LeGrande of Agency; six grandchildren, Angie, Natika, Ashley, Haley, Cassandra and Jake; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Cecil “Bud” LeGrande of Ottumwa; a sister, Jerry Gaffey of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Benedict and a grandson, Alex Mabe. His body has been cremated. There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Elks Club, 413 S. Iowa Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa, on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice Serving Wapello & Davis Counties, 927 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa 52501.
