Description	:	Alexander McLeod came to the U.S. about 1863, apparently already married to his wife, Mary McMillan, in Scotland in about 1861. (This family has significant issues with giving consistent dates and birth locations on censuses.) There oldest daughter is listed as being born in Ireland, so they may have been there for some period of time before their final voyage to the U.S. I found no indication that his parents came with him--presumably they stayed in Scotland. Without more specific information, it's hard to tell. The first U.S. census in which he appears is 1870, already married and with children. Upon coming to the U.S., Alexander and his family first spent a few years in Maine, then in Racine County, Wisconsin from the late 1860s into the 1870s, then in Rock Island, Illinois through most of the 1870s, finally appearing in Clinton County, Iowa in the 1880 census. He later lived in Cedar County, Iowa at least through 1910. However, his obituary says he had been at his ranch in Montana at least from 1905, and his wife died on the same ranch in 1911. Perhaps he and his wife were going back and forth between Montana and Iowa. (More problems with dates . . . ) There were six children who reached adulthood, also with significant problems relating to their birth dates and places: --Mary "Minnie" McLeod was born about 1862 in either Ireland or Maine. She married Oscar A. Bleasdale, who also later married her sister Edith. Mary was the mother of Vera (who, however, has Edith entered as her mother on her marriage record (Edith was her stepmother and aunt but not her biological mother)). Mary died sometime 1887-1890 in Nebraska or California or in between. After her marriage, and maybe before, she was teaching school in Enterprise, Nebraska. Oddly, Mary's name appears as Oscar's wife on the 1900 census, though with Edith's birth date. Maybe someone was talking to the census-taker about Oscar previously having been married to Mary and he got confused? --John McLeod was born in Maine about 1865, was living in Clinton County, Iowa in 1880 and died in Illinois in 1917. (He is linked in FAG.) --Edith Christina McLeod was born in 1866 in Racine, Wisconsin, and married Oscar Bleasdale in 1891, presumably after her sister Mary's death. Or did he go back and forth between two sisters for wives? Oddly, her grave marker says she was born 1871, although her death record is correct and she was already 3 years old on the 1870 census. (She is linked in FAG.) --Daniel or Allen was born in 1870 in Racine, Wisconsin and died at age 17 in Cedar County, Iowa. (He is linked in FAG.) --Norman Albert McLeod was born in Illinois about 1873 an was living with his family in Clinton County, Iowa in 1880. By 1910 he had become a physician and was living in Chicago, Illinois. He married Flora Ward in Michigan in 1914, then took over his father's ranch in White Sulphur Springs, Montana when his father died and was listed as "Rancher" on his 1917-1918 draft registration. In the 1920 census, however, he is listed as a physician and surgeon, living with his wife and 2 children--Mary and Alan. Suffering from severe depression, he committed suicide in December 1920. On his death certificate, his wife put down that he was born in Rhode Island, with a question mark. It says "M.D." for occupation. --William Harvey McLeod was born in Rock Island, Illinois in 1878 and died in the state of Virginia in 1940. How he went from Iowa to Virginia is not clear. He is linked in FAG.) Alexander's obituary says his wife died 2 years previously, but it was actually 3-1/2 years . . .
