Description	:	Alexander Alvin Shanklin, one of 13 children in his family, was born October 20, 1877, at Hicksville, Ohio. He passed away at the General hospital, York, Neb., Friday, July 3, 1959, at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 13 days. At the age of 16, Alex left home and came to Nebraska and started working at Nebraska City and Tecumseh for the Burlington railroad. Read More	Alexander Alvin Shanklin, one of 13 children in his family, was born October 20, 1877, at Hicksville, Ohio. He passed away at the General hospital, York, Neb., Friday, July 3, 1959, at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 13 days. At the age of 16, Alex left home and came to Nebraska and started working at Nebraska City and Tecumseh for the Burlington railroad. His first job with the Burlington was in the capacity of water boy for a bridge building crew. From that first work with the Burlington, he went on to other jobs and finally became brakeman, a position he held until his retirement in 1942 at the age of 65. He was married in 1903, and to this union there were born three daughters, Farris Ecker, now deceased, Violet Foster, now of Lincoln and Clara Baker, now of Bremmerton, Wash. November 24, 1924, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Martson, and to this union was born one son, Arlo, who was killed in action in World War II in France on August 10 1944. Mr. Shanklin joined Lodge No. 104 of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons at Wymore, Neb., in 1904 and in 1915 he affiliated with the Fairmont Lodge No. 48. He was also a member of Fairmont Odd Fellow Lodge No. 42, having joined in April, 1914. Mr. Shanklin is survived by his wife, Gertrude, the two daughters mentioned above; one sister of Detroit, Mich.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Shanklin was well known and well respected in the Fairmont community. He leaves to remember him a large number of friends. Funeral services were held at the Kritner-Farmer Funeral Home in Fairmont at 2 p.m. Monday, July 6, Rev. George M. Seick officiating. Oliver Moul sang "We are Going Down the Valley" and "Beyond the Sunset." Mrs. A.P. Stewart was accompanist. Pallbearers were M.T. Norris, Charles Baker, William Jorgensen, John Anderson, Ora Robbins and Everett Nichols. Interment was in the Fairmont cemetery with the Fairmont Masonic lodge in charge of the burial service.
