GERALD DIES OF CANCER Crisfield Merchant Passes Away At An Early Hour Sunday Morning Alexander J. Gerald, well known citizen and business man of Crisfield, died at his home on Somerset Avenue, in this city, at an early hour Sunday morning. Mr. Gerald was 66 years old. The deceased was a member of Immanuel M. E. Church and was always faithful in his attendance at all church services when he was permitted to do so. He was an upright Christian gentleman and enjoyed the friendship of a large circle of friends. His character was above reproach. In his death his immediate family has lost a loving husband, a kind father and and an affectionate brother; the community has lost one of its best citizens, and his church, one of its most faithful members. Surely a man of this type will be greatly missed. In early life Mr. Gerald was a waterman. At one time he was a member of the Crisfield Police Force and proved himself an efficient and capable officer. Eighteen years ago he entered the mercantile business and conducted an up to date grocery store on Broadway. He was still engaged in this enterprise at the time of his death. Surviving are his wife who, before their marriage, was Miss Effie Tawes; one daughter, Miss Mary Gerald, of Philadelphia; two sisters, Mrs. J. Edward Pruitt, of Crisfield, and Mrs. Oswald Glitz, of Pocomoke City, and three brothers, Fred B. Gerald, assistant post master at Crisfield; William and Davis Gerald, both of Crisfield. Funeral services were conducted at his home Tuesday afternoon by District Superintendent John J. Bunting, of Salisbury, until recently pastor of Immanuel M. E. Church, and Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, pastor of Asbury M. E. Church, in the absence of Rev. Ralph L. Minker, pastor of Immanuel Church, who was unavoidably out of the city. Interment was in Asbury cemetery.
