Description	:	Alexander Jackson Ritter, the son of Henry Ritter and Sarah Bragg Ritter, was born at Tuscola, Illinois, Aug. 30,1849. His father was a native of Kentucky. Read More	Alexander Jackson Ritter, the son of Henry Ritter and Sarah Bragg Ritter, was born at Tuscola, Illinois, Aug. 30,1849. His father was a native of Kentucky. During his early childhood his parents moved to Illinois and were pioneers of that section of the state. His mother, Sarah Bragg was a native of Virginia and her father was one of the prominent and progressive citizens from that time until the present day. Henry Ritter and Sarah Bragg were married in the year 1848. To this union were born five sons and one daughter; Alexander Jackson Ritter, Jonas Newton, Harriet Elizabeth, Douglas, Willie and Jimmie. In 1853 they came to Afton, Iowa, where they lived the rest of their lives. The three youngest children died in infancy. Newt Ritter passed to his reward in June, 1917. Harriet Benedict is the only survivor and she continues to live on the old original homestead of the Ritter family. Jack Ritter and Mahala Longshore were married and six children came into their home, Charles Jackson, on the home place, Clara May Foss of New Haven, Conn.; Clarence Franklin on his Father's farm near the home place; Arthur Elvin of Milwaukee; Ralph Fredrick of Chicago and Jimmie who was taken in infancy. Jack Ritter was one of the two oldest pioneers of Union County, having lived in the same locality for 75 years, three quarters of a century. He has been an active citizen of the township, having filled various civic offices from time to time. Shortly after marriage he united with the Emmanuel Baptist Church of the vicinity and has been a faithful layman of the church in every capacity possible, first as Sunday School Supt., then as trustee and finally as deacon. In the last capacity, he was active until his death. On Dec. 21, 1927, he became ill thru a heart attack, followed by a stroke of paralysis. Due to his advanced age and weakened condition, he was unable to rally and on Jan. 11,, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 11 days he was taken to his heavenly home. The wife and five surviving children mourn the loss most keenly because he was been a devoted husband and a most kind and loving father. He died as he had lived, firm in the faith of his Savior. The funeral service was conducted by the pastor, I. Ossman at 2:00 p.m. in the Emmanuel Baptist Church. His talk was taken from Isaiah 40:6-8, the subject being:"Human Frailty and Perpetuity of Divine Word." The music was furnished by the church quartet: Mr. & Mrs. A. Groesbeck and Mr. & Mrs. H.
