Read More	Alexander Sedgwick, 87, died at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia, on July 22, 2017. Born June 8, 1930 in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of William Ellery Sedgwick and Sarah Cabot Sedgwick. Alexander graduated from the Groton School in 1948, Harvard University in 1952 and then served in the United States Army before returning to Harvard where he received a doctorate in history in 1963. He joined the faculty of the University of Virginia the same year and served as Chairman of the Corcoran Department of History (1979-85), Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (1985-90) and Dean of Graduate Studies (1990-95). A University Professor, he served a term as President of the French Historical Society. He was a specialist in early modern French history, his scholarship focusing on religion and politics. A lively, dedicated teacher, his survey course in European intellectual history was popular among generations of undergraduate students. Three places framed Alexander's life. Stockbridge, Massachusetts, ancestral home of his New England forbears, where he grew up, whose countryside he loved and to which he returned annually until illness and infirmity prevented travel. Charlottesville, Virginia where his career as a teacher, scholar and administrator at the University of Virginia evolved, where he raised his family and made lifelong friends whose camaraderie brought joy to his life and a deep sense of commitment to his adopted community. And France, whose history, culture, language and gastronomy enriched his intellect and spirit. Friends and relatives who mourn him have referred to his gentleness, fairness, sensitivity and depth - his inherent kindness, courtesy and gentlemanliness. Many have referred to his sharp wit, infectious laugh and charming eccentricities that included a lifelong battle with all things mechanical and digital. He read widely in English poetry, much of which he knew by heart, and could summon a line or stanza of verse relevant to any situation. Music was another love. He studied piano throughout his adult life and served for a number of years on the board of the Charlottesville Tuesday Evening Concert Series. But above all he loved family and friends and was a beloved father and husband. Alexander is survived by his wife of 56 years, daughter, son, daughter-in- law, grandchildren and sister. The family wishes to express thanks to the dedicated medical professionals who cared for Alexander in the months before his death, in particular Dr. Daniel M. Becker, Becky Swarz, R.N., and the skilled doctors and nurses of the University of Virginia hospital. A reception to honor and celebrate Alexander's life will take place at a time to be announced.
