Wood passed away at his home in this city at 7:30 o'clock Monday morning, August 10, 1925, at the good old age of 82 years, 5 months and 21 days He was born in Indiana February 20, 1843. Because of his request that all things connected with his funeral service and interment be made very brief we are not able to give our readers but very little concerning his life, many details usually found in an obituary being omitted. This much we can state. About ten years ago, a few months before buying the Leader, the writer was gathering some notes from early settlers in this part of Custer county, with the idea of using them in some reminiscences of the early days in northeast Custer county that we were then furnishing to Editor Lorkosky. One person we interviewed one Saturday while here from Comstock where we were teaching school was A. T. Wood. Referring to the memorandum book, in which we made these notes, we find that in connection with his name we have recorded that he came to Nebraska in the year 1873 and located in Burt county in the extreme eastern part of the state. From that county he came to Custer county in 1877 and filed on a quarter section of land in the extreme northeastern part of the county. We note that we jotted down at that time the words, "Drove past county courthouse at Ord." That was forty-eight years ago. The first time we ever heard of Mr. Wood was along about 1905, twenty years ago. At that time we visited quite frequently with Rev. McFarlane, pastor of the M. E. church here then. During one of those visits Mr. McFarlane told us that he had been out visiting one of the members of the M. E. church at West Union, then part of the Sargent charge. He told us this man was A. T .Wood and that he lived in Antelope Valley several miles south of West Union. He spoke quite highly of Mr. Wood. Later on a sister of the writer lodged at the Wood home while teaching school in that part of the county. Because of what we learned of him in this way and what we learned of him by acquaintance, we came to think very highly of him. He was a member of the M. E. church of this city, and until about a year ago was an official member. Mr. Wood was married twice. His first wife is buried at the Kent cemetery. There are four sons and one daughter living as a result of this union. His second wife survives him and very tenderly cared for him a few years ago when he had an attack of illness that resulted in his having to get about town in a wheelchair. Later on he regained his health sufficiently to get about well. Then his wife became ill and for some time had to use the same wheelchair and he as tenderly cared for her and took her about town. Mrs. Charley Wolf of the Somerford country is the only surviving child of this union. Two sons, Paul A. Wood of Lincoln, Nebr., and W. E. Wood of Oelwein, Iowa, were here for the funeral which was held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the M. E. church. This consisted of singing by a mixed quartette, the reading of a brief obituary and a few minutes talk by Rev. M. M. Long, who based his remarks on a portion of the gospel according to St. John. At Mr. Wood's request, interment was made in the Sargent cemetery. In addition to his wife, four sons and two daughters he leaves to mourn his death, twenty-two grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one sister, two brothers, other relatives, and a host of friends.
