Alfred attended rural school (Washington #8; South of Spring Lake) until time to go to confirmation. In about 1918, he attended Zion Lutheran School in Denison. Alfred would board and room in Denison during the school week. On Mondays, he would ride his pony to the Buck Grove depot to catch the 5:25 AM train. When he would arrive at the Buck Grove depot, he would turn his pony loose and the pony would go back to the farm by himself. Alfred would ride the train to Arion and then board another train to Denison, but would have to wait for the Denison train in the Arion in a coal house for 1 and 1/2 hours. He would stay at a boarding house in Denison during the week, while he attended school. Alfred and Meta was married on Sept 3 1924 by Rev Frese. They moved to the Spring Lake farm when Jacob and Augusta moved to Omaha, where Augusta was born. Alfred was township trustee and school director for many years, and was with Farmers Mutual Insurance in Schleswig for 19 years serving as claim adjuster and writing policies. Obituary: Alfred Carstens was born August 14, 1903, the son of William and Dorthea Schiernbeck Carstens. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa on Friday, February 10, 1995 at the age of ninety-one years. Alfred was born on a farm near Schleswig and began his education in a rural school near his home. He completed his education at the Zion Lutheran School in Denison and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church. After completing his education, Alfred helped his family on the farm until he was united in marriage to Meta Greder at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by Rev. William Frese on September 3, 1924. The couple farmed in the Buck Grove area where they were blessed with the birth of two children. Alfred and Meta purchased the farm from her parents in 1944, and remained there until retiring from farming in 1965 when they moved to Denison. In 1963, Alfred began a career in the insurance industry when he was elected to the board of directors of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company in Schleswig and remained with the firm until retiring in February of 1983. He enjoyed fishing and was particularly fond of Spring Lake, a lake he developed on his home farm in the mid-fifties. He enjoyed occupying his free time there for many years and in more recent years he continued speaking of his pride and enjoyment of the time he spent at the lake. Alfred was a past member of the Washington Township board of Trustees and a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Denison. He was a loving husband and a devoted father whose Christian faith is evidenced in the kindness and consideration he had for his family and friends. He was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove before transferring his membership to the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Wilbert, Emil and Irwin who died in infancy. Survivors include his wife, Meta of Denison; two sons, Lloyd and his wife, Vera of Defiance and Gilbert and his wife, Ruth of Loveland, Colorado; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hilda Fuller of Manilla and Irma Bromert and her husband, Herb of Manning and one sister-in-law, Irene Carstens of Watertown, South Dakota. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 13 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip Block officiating. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for vocalist Larry Boeck, who sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Casketbearers were the six grandchildren: Gary Carstens, Ross Carstens, Dale Carstens, Gordon Carstens, Don Carstens, and Sandra Carstens. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
