Read More	Schoenfeld Alfred F. 11/02/1929-- 03/31/2002--- Korea (VETERAN) Alfred F. Schoenfeld was born November 2, 1929, the son of Herbert and Anna Preul Schoenfeld. He died March 31, 2002 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of seventy-two. Alfred was born in Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa and was Baptized in Christ on December 22, 1929, and confirmed March 25, 1945 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. He received his elementary education at Hanover Country School No. 8. On September 10, 1952, he entered the United States Army, serving his country in Korea during the Korean War with the 92nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion. During his service, he was awarded his high school diploma while in Korea, having earned a 92.6 grade point average. He was also awarded numerous medals including the Korean Service medal, the Good Conduct medal, the National Defense Service medal, the United Nations Service medal, and several Bronze Service Stars. On October 10, 1954, Alfred was united in marriage to Norma Evers at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children. The couple began farming in Schleswig and continued to do so until his retirement in 1992. Since then, Alfred worked at Terra Chemical and Farmers Arcadia Coop until the time of his death. Alfred was a very loving and understanding husband, father, and grandfather, who took exceptional interest in and never missed his children's activities, especially in sports and other school events. He had a special fondness for his grandchildren, calling his grandsons his "buddies" and his granddaughters his "tooties". He was known for his constant smile, telling jokes and laughing. In his spare time, Alfred enjoyed deer hunting, and was one of the first in Iowa to receive a deer hunting license when deer season first opened in 1954. He enjoyed working with his neighbors, especially if there was a plowing bee for someone, playing cards, and visiting with everyone in the feed store. He also enjoyed trips out west to Winner and Pierre, South Dakota to purchase cattle. He was active in his community, and was very instrumental in obtaining the Army tank in the park in Schleswig. He was an active member of the American Legion and served as a Color Guard Pallbearer. He was currently serving as the Commander of the Veterans of Foreign War. He was a board member of the Morgan Cemetery Association, the Schleswig Community Club and an original member of the Schleswig Calf Show. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig where he served as Treasurer and as an Elder. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Delbert, three brothers-in-law: Howard Keim, Ralph Vogt, and Derald Evers; and one sister-in-law, Maryln Schoenfeld. He is survived by his loving wife, Norma of Schleswig; two sons: Lydell of Schleswig; and Leon and his wife, Janell of Manning; and one daughter, Calise Thygesen and her husband, Wes of Audubon; seven grandchildren: Kelsey, Adam, Spencer, and their mother, Carla Schoenfeld, of Schleswig; Derrick and Lexie Thygesen of Audubon; and Kalina and Keaton Schoenfeld of Manning; one sister, Narlean Keim of Charter Oak; two brothers: Norman Schoenfeld of Schleswig. and Alvern Schoenfeld of Arizona; three sisters-in-law: Darlene Vogt of Charter Oak; Pat Evers of Denison; and Ardell Ewoldt and her husband, Henry of Kiron; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
