MEMORIAL RITES FOR ALFRED KANEL Alfred Kanel was born on the 14th of January, 1882, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Kanel, in Gruendelwald Switzerland, where he spent the early part of his childhood. At the age of eight years he came to this country with his parents and settled in the Honey Creek, community. On June 4, 1912 he was united in holy matrimony with Miss Elizabeth Fankhauser, the couple residing in the South Humboldt area where Mr. Kanel followed the profession of farming. To this beloved marriage three children were born: Louise Elizabeth, who died in infancy, (1913). Nina Maxine and John Alfred. Mr. Kanel and his wife made a Christian home for their children. During his lifetime Mr. Kanel's witness to the Lord was evidenced by his faithful assistance and service to the Four Mile Church. At an early age he entered the church reaffirming his Faith in Christ through the Rite of Confirmation under the instruction of Rev. Otto Kuhn. In manhood he continued his witness in the capacity of a consistopryman of the church from the years 1918 to 1926 and 1936 to 1940. His sacrificial service as a church officer is verified by his re-election and by his valuable contributions to the spiritual life of the church. Mr. Kanel served as a faithful member of the school board and contributed to the welfare of his community additionally in this manner. Although Mr. Kanel had been in ill health for some time, it was not until Sunday April 26, that his condition necessitated specialized hospital care. Accompanied by his faithful wife, he was taken to the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha and remained there until called to the Higher Service by his creator on Monday May 4, 1953 at 5:30 P.M. Mr. Kanel was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam, Rudolph and Adolph and a sister, Mrs. Mattie Schmidt. He is survived by and is mourned by his endeared wife, Elizabeth; a daughter, Nina Maxine, the wife of Rev. Ernest Klaudt of LeSueur, Minn.; a son, John Alfred and his wife Ida, of the Humboldt area; five sisters: Mrs. Andrew Andrett of Garnett, Kans., Mrs. Rosa Hunzeker of Humboldt, Mrs. William Boehmer of DuBois, Mrs. Ida Minger of Sabetha, Kan., and Mrs. Frank Stalder of Humboldt; by five grandchildren; other relatives and many, many friends. Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday May 7 at the Four Mile Evangelical and Reformed Church with the Rev. William D. Froeschner, pastor of the church officiating.
