Read More	Alfred Mills Heard was born to James Elial Heard and Jane Maria Dent in St Mary's County, Maryland. He married Cora Mary Yates on January 11, 1893, in Our Lady's Church at Medley's Neck, St Mary's County. They lived at the old Heard Farm in Leonardtown. Children of Alfred and Cora were: Ula Marie Heard b. 6 Dec 1895; Vanetta Cecelia Heard b. 18 Jul 1897; James Mills Heard, b. 7 Jan 1899; Joseph West Heard, b. 24 Apr 1900; John St. Clair Heard b. 24 Jul 1903; Cora Catherine Heard, b. 14 Jan 1907; and Nina Corabell Heard, b. 2 Oct 1911. When Alfred's brother Joseph and his wife Nina passed away prematurely, their son Roland Elial Heard joined Alfred and Cora's family also. The family grew and traded for much of their own food, as well as cultivated tobacco. All of the children remembered helping during the tobacco harvest and helping Alfred with horseshoeing, harness repair and other farm chores. Carriage rides into Leonardtown and around the countryside were a popular pastime for the family, and in the winter, the family sleigh with bells on the horse took them to Church on Sunday. Alfred and Cora's brothers and sisters were frequent visitors to the farm and the children loved to see their Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. The children had fond names for all of their aunts and uncles. Uncle Doc, Aunt Nina, Uncle Dent, Uncle Harry, Aunt Vic, and others were fondly recalled as they grew up. Alfred played the banjo, "clawhammer style" and several relatives also played guitars, the "bones" and other instruments. Music was an important part of the family gatherings. Alfred's old banjo remains in the family as a treasured reminder of a good life on the farm. These memories were passed down by James Mills Heard to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. who were amazed that he could "play the spoons" on his knee.
