Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church wit Rev. William Catholic Church with Rev. William Osborn celebrating the Mass. Burial followed at the church cemetery with Military Rites by the John J. Peters American Legion post #159, Hoven. Alfred Schaefer, son of Annie (Karst) and Mike Schaefer, was born at Hoven Oct. 30, 1931. He attended rural school near his parents farm north of Hoven and also attended St. Anthony's Grade School in Hoven. Following his schooling, he farmed with his family. Alfred served his country in the United Stats Army. He served in Korea, working as a crane operator. He was honorable discharged Nov. 29, 1955, and continued to serve in the Army Reserve through 1961. Following his discharge, he returned to Hoven. He married Joyce Lutz at St. Anthony's on May 18, 1959. Alfred worked for Weber Construction, Frost Chevrolet, and Blue Valley Dairy. After that he went into farming full time. In addition to his farming, he also had sideline businesses that kept him very busy. From 1968-94 he owned and operated Al's Welding Shop. In 1973, he build his own bin mover and in 1980 he built his own mobile grain cleaner. In July 1994, he was diagnosed with cancer which prompted his retirement. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He was retired from the Hoven Volunteer Fire Dept. and a member of the John J. Peters American Legion Post. He was a former member and director of Swan Lake Sportsman's Club and belonged to Hoven Country Club. Alfred thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing, growing potatoes for his family and friends, and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Joyce, Hoven; six daughters; JoLynn (Dennis) Hawkinson, Shari (Jerry) Kaup, Wanda (Brad) Bachman, all of Hoven; LeAnn (Lorin) Wolf and Jackie (Don) Hawkinson, both of Bismarck, ND; and Karla Schaefer, Aberdeen; three sisters: Esther (Robert) Morse, Seneca, Dorothy Klocker and Merici (Robert) Rader, Hoven; and 11 grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, and two grandsons. Castetbearers were Dennis Hawkinson, Jerry Kaup, Brad Bachman, Lorin Wolf, Don Hawkinson, and Jeff May.
