Description	:	Alfred was the son of Jacob Shaffer and Sarah Jane Ripple. He was one of four (known) brothers who served in the Civil War. Alfred was 18 and a resident of Black Hawk County when he enlisted as a Private on Dec. 10, 1863. He mustered in Co B 4th Iowa Cavalry on Dec. 22, 1863. Wounded in action (left arm) at White's Station near Memphis, TN. Died of disease (typhoid fever) Jan. 14, 1865 at Memphis, TN. He was captured in action June 10, 1864 at Brice's Cross-roads, Mississippi; escaped from captivity, and died of disease Oct. 6, 1864. He is interred at Marietta National Cemetery in Georgia. Cyrus served with Co C 32nd Iowa Infantry and died of disease Dec. 7, 1864 at Nashville. He is interred at Nashville National Cemetery. The headstone located at Old Barclay Cemetery lists the names of Ephraim, Cyrus and Alfred under the name of their mother, Sarah. It is assumed this is a memorial headstone or cenotaph for the three brothers. I could not find a headstone for Alfred at a national cemetery.
